I've been noticing on my '01 (~1100mi.) that when punching it from about 35mph, my truck will downshift to 2nd gear. The problem is that at about 3200rpm, my tach actually seems to drop for about half a second and then continues to rise. It almost feels like my torque converter is slipping or something. I can reproduce the problem consistently, whether the engine is cold or hot. Any ideas?

Mine does the same thing and I think it is the converter lock up. I believe I read about this in other posts, you might want to do a search.

If you find out anything more post it for us.

Take it to Ford and have a trans tech go on a test drive with you. The problem is easy to reproduce. My guess is that you have it when you're on the throttle, but maybe only 75%.

They'll put it on the rack and hook it up the the computer and check for anything unusual. After this visit, you'll have the documentation ragarding the "problem."

I took mine in at 300 miles for the same reason. At 10,000 miles, it got worse quickly. I took it in, and after the test drive and computer check, they "black boxed" the trans and installed a new one.

The new one, about 1,000 miles old now, already has the "phantom shift."

Push in the OD button on the end of the gear selector and turn off the OD. Try it again and see if it does it with the OD turned off. If not then it is the converter lockup kicking in. I haven't seen one that doesn't do this yet. I am now on my 2nd tranny and it did it from the 1st day it was in.

Seems like they all burp either on the 1-2 shift upr or 2-1 downshift.My shift kit seems to have eliminated it.I'm on my 2nd tranny and when installing the shift kit we noticed that the spring on the new tranny for the 1-2 shift was much softer than the other springs.It was also alot softer than the old spring was in the tranny when the truck was new(2000).Anyway one thing is for sure the trannys are the weak link,talking to the ford tranny worker he said there have been problems for years as long as the failure rate isn't to excessive, they don't care,well I was a bit reluctant to belive this until the day my new tranny was to be installed,I got to the dealership, they said we had 11 tranmissions come in but none of them was for your truck!!!!!!Thats fine, but wow that's alot of replacements,I don't care if it's going on an escort or mustang 11 in one day s##t!!!!!!!!Anyway,like was suggested, get the problem documented,you may wanna try a shift kit,or a chip to see if line pressure increase helps the tranny,it might or might not...I also found alot had to do with the weather, funny but true,the hotter,the more burping, like a baby!!!!! Just my thoughts, good luck.....
