Post Breather Caps... Why...

Why, are you guys doing this mod, makes no sense to me.
My favorite reason so far has to be "the blower pushes oil back through the valve seals." My next is "it make 4 hp on the dyno by reducing the pressure." Lastly “it keeps the intake clean”.

My favorite question is:
"Do I need a chip reburn"

I do not understand this mod for these reasons.
1) Oil isn't that bad for your engine...
2) I'm still trying to figure out the blower oil thing, not buying it...
3) Make 4 hp, well that is less that the statistical error on a dyno.
4) The pictures I have seen of this, just looks like a way to suck extra air into the intake, so it is unmetered air. In all likelihood, error messages are avoided by changing a few settings in the chip such as the MAF - mass transfer function in the chip.
5) Do you change your Oil more often? Seems like a great way to suck extra dusk into your oil.

This one is easy to answer.

Since you can have blow back across the piston rings, and it’s necessary to equalize the crankcase. If you don’t then you can have a pressurized crankcase that can impede HP, so the Ford engineers simple connect the crank case breather back into the fresh air intake to pass EPA. Now you’re burning fresh air and spent crankcase burnt air together, so in a way you’re screwing up the A/F ratio’s potentially.

Like you said I doubt anyone is making very many more HP, but at least you’re only burning fresh air.

As for the MAF oiled, well I’ll let someone else answer that one?

the tube from the drivers side valve cover is after the MAF, but before the throttle body..
oil on the MAF would be bad!

my throttle body looked like poop when i pulled the intake boot off, so i did this:

my boot/throttle body looked like this:

my check engine light hasnt come on, so i guess everything is okay.

i did this back in feb.

Thumbs up

My boot looked like yours but the T/B wasn't as bad. I ran a filter before the chip came out. I never got a code but when I floored it from a stop with the back glass open you could smell gas for a moment. Rob G mentioned that the computer usually over compensated for being lean and made them run rich on the bottom end. He said all of this before I mentioned the gas smell so what he told me made sense.

I have had the new boot and chip for the 90mm MAF on since March with the crankcase filter. It is dry as a bone. No oil to be found and no gas smell.

You want the crankcase hydrocarbons burned...
Otherwise you are venting them to atmosphere, a direct violation of emissions laws, one I feel is much worse then no-cats.

Yes you do want them burned...

I have solved the problem with MY truck by simply maintaining 5.5 qts of oil in the engine. I once had more oil in my TB and boot, cooler, lower intake than anyone here, and was testing and trying everything possible to get rid if it...but no luck.

So now...I keep all my tubes and lines connected, and maintain an oil free intake track. Try it... what could it hurt?? But it worked for me IMO

SilverBullet,

I took apart my blower at 15K and the intercooler was brown !!! It is not good when your intercooler gets clogged by engine oil. The breather cap has since solved this problem, there is no longer any engine oil digested back through the throttle body. A new chip is necessary when you install an open element cap on your valve covers because there is unmetered air that enters through those filter caps. I saw what happens on scan tools at idle, the truck goes lean and overcompansates by giving a crap load of extra fuel to the mixture. Even if your truck does not set off a check engine light you still have a lean condition and the only way to fix it is by computer chip. Hope this helps.

P.S. my truck did NOT pick up a tenth with this mod

Later.

RobG

Mr. Black,
I would bet a nice shot of NITROUS would solve that problem also...dont you think? That would make everything squeaky clean
