Sorry, even w/ gears it will not make his car faster. Gears don't always improve times on a basically stock vehicle. They definitely help to improve a novice's times more so than anything else. Even w/ full exhaust he will not be able to run w/ you IMHO. It would be close then, but not close enough.

He'll need heads/cam/intake plus exhaust to out run you handily.

Cool

You'll slap the snot out of him. See if you can sucker him into betting. What were they back then, about 225HP?

With an expert driver, his car will run 13.8-14.0s. This means very, very good air. I've seen it done in lightly modded Fox-3 cars. This is also considering a perfect tune. The car is 8 years old, so unless he has done a tune up recently, it will not be optimum.

Chances are good it will run mid-14s at best, meaning you'll crush him. You will beat that car from stoplight to stoplight AND on the highway.

I would not be worried.

Cool

I've owned and modded 4 5.0L Mustangs, so I think I know a little about this topic

Is it a GT or LX?
A properly tuned LX coupe with 3.73 gears will run high 13's at around 97 MPH with a top notch driver. If its a heavier GT or the driver is less experienced or the car isn't tuned to perfection then the car could be considerably slower. Just the gears and K&N won't be enough to take a stock Lightning.

This race could be anywhere from a 2 car length victory to an absolute slaughter, depending on the variables above.

However with a few mods the 5.0L can be very quick.
I had a 91 LX coupe with 3.73 gears, mild cam, completely stock heads, pulleys, and headers with off-road exhaust, that ran 13.20@103 on street tires w/1.9 60 ft.

It sounds like either he is making mods he's not telling you about or he hasn't got a clue.

my .02 cents. I own a 93LX when I bought it back in 98 with around 40,000 miles on it I ran anywhere from 14.2-14.8 at around 95-96mph with me (an unexperienced dragstrip driver) on stock size 225 street radial tires. I added 3.73 gears and 255 drag radials and ran consistent 14.0s. since then by basically only removing weight from the front end of the car (sway bar, smog pump, a/c and powersteering pumps, fiberglass hood, etc.) my last run was a 13.50 at 99.? mph the motor, exhaust, tranny, are bone stock, valve covers or intake have never been off. anyway, point is, he has potential to give you a run for it. but if his car is truely bone stock except for K&N and 3.73's and a shifter on street tires you will stomp his ***. his car has half the power/torque and even less traction than your truck. good luck. remember it's all in good fun.

sincerely,
chris

The GT will be slightly slower than the LX, you should have no problem.

Twiztid,

There was obviously something wrong with the 5.0L you beat. All of mine ran mid to low 14's stock on street tires and would dip into the 13's on slicks. So for a 16sec V6 to beat one there is obviously something seriously wrong.

The 5.0L Mustang ruled the streets for 10 years, show it some respect.
Yes its time is done now, but it was great for the time.

You will pull him hard off the line 5.0's spin like heck. Unless they have subframe connectors, control arms and tires. 3:73's are so low 1st gear is gone and they light up quick. 3:55 is much better for the street. Most GT's run upper 14's a H-pipe and airintake help them a lot though. They struggle over 100 also due to bad wind management.

We've definitely got a crack smoker on our hands here.

HAHAH, just kidding BTW, you do realize that even though you won, stock for stock the EFI 5.0's (yep, even '86s) are quicker than your 3.8.

Still doesn't matter. A friend of mine ran 13. http://www.v6power.com/timeslips/times.htm
Follow that link and look at number 2. Thats a friend of mine name Pete ran that time. He also ran a 13.8 with just 6lbs of boost from a Powerdyne and T-Lok on Radials. That last time was with the addition of a 4.2 Upper Intake from a F-150.

I don't think Pete's car is representative of the current V6s. I have lunch with Pete about once a week and he's invested huge amounts of time and money into that car. he says he's gonna stop when he gets into the 12s. Yeah, right!
