Post best chip

I know this has been beat into the ground, but I thought I would ask again.

I read about the diablo chip and they had a dyno sheet on a 2001 L and it showed like 41 hp and 42 ft/pd of torque increase. I like those numbers and it is tempting.

Then I read about the psp chip and it says up to 25 hp and 20 torque.

Now I do not race at the track, there is not one even close to me. I just drive on the street and I like the power. I know that the psp has a 2 way and a 4 way chip, but if I don't race is there a reason to have this. I am interested in the diablo and know that they may not have the same results in every truck, but that is impressive.

I have seen on the JL website that he has his ram air kit and diablo chip in a kit together and am wondering if that would be the best bang for the buck.

What do you guys think and is there a better chip out there.

Is the 2 or 4 way worth it if I do not race.

Thanks
Paul

I am not afraid to reply to this: lol

Listen..there has been many posts on this board and a few others as well, that cover this subject each year. In fact there have been many closed threads because it gets pretty bad sometimes....
My personal opinion is, it's up to you to decide...gather your info, make a choice, its that simple. There are plenty different views on all 3 of the major players for the lightning world. And with whoever you go with, I am sure they will provide you with a strong chip.
I recommend you go the tracks, and see what guys are running with what chips.

There are many people running good with both chips.I have Johnny Ls and I absolutly love my latest program and would not give it up for anything. The throttle response is the best ive ever had and I have had them all.

One thing I like in sals chip better than any other one i tested was the shifts. The truck shifts IDENTICAL as factory when you are not WOT and have a clean crisp shift at WOT.I personally Like the throttle response in JLs though. It has not beeen matched in my eyes by anyone else (SAFLEY!!)Nobody has been able to duplicate the ways sals shifted as i can see but ,I personally think the street program is a little weaker than JLs.

All these chips have their own ups and downs, you need to find the best for you.Im sure if you went with JL/SAL/JDM,you would have a chip that you would love.everybodys is different in their own little way One more thing,A down to me might be an up to you

I did not want to start a chip war and that is not my reason for posting.

I am a lightning owner in search of the best products for my truck that will give me a balance of performance on demand and daily drivability.

I hope no one starts some type of war and if so I apologize for it in advance.

To Spiro I really appreciate your response and you and sal have been the most positive in your responses to me. I will call you on monday and be placing an order.

To anyone reading this please only post your own expereinces and only those you think pertinent to the subject.

Please do not start a war.

I am new to the L only one week in and did not want to start a war.

Personally I think that the psp team has been the best in response and the most honest with me and I will be doing business with them from here on out.

Thanks
Paul

One thing for sure. Those of us who race have multiposition chips. The best strip program will kill your gas mileage and is NOT advisable to run on the street as it is too hard on your tranny, rear end and engine. All single position chips, reguardless of maker are a compromise. Something to remember.

I haven't tried Sals, or Johnny's chip. I have the JDM chip in my 2001 and it works awsome. His street program really woke my truck up, it shifts much better, has better throttle responce, and has improved my gass millage 3 mpg.
He will program the chip any way you like from mild to wild it is up to you.If you decide you want to go more agressive he will reburn the chip for just the cost of shipping.
I have friends who have the other chips and they are also very happy with them, so I am sure you will be happy with any of the chips.

you can find him at http://www.svtperformance.com
Give Jim a call, he will be happy to answer any questions you have.

These guys are right, no matter what you do, stick with the 3 proven performers. I have strayed away a couple of times and all it ended up being, was a waste of money.

From what I can tell, the top 3 chips all have different "Personalities", just like our trucks. So hitting that "Best" combination the first time out might be asking to much. Of the 3, I use PSP and JDM and they both have there own way of doing things.

This might sound stupid, but you might want to try all three just to see for yourself.

bad as L

I appreciate your response and I plan to stay with the big 3. Right now I am most happy with the responses I have been getting on these boards with psp.

They seem to be the most honest and straight forward guys.

I wish jdm had a website where you could at least see pics and descriptions of his stuff.

That would probably be a godsend for their business as a long distance phone call still won't show me a pic.

Cool

The real difficult question is you need to ask yourself is “how I will use my truck”. On the street, driveability is the name of the game. The problem is that you and other drivers (like your wife) may have different ideas of what is good drivability. Will you be getting to work in a horrible rainstorm or return in a snowstorm. Will you be towing a 7000 lb trailer on occasion? Do you drop the truck on occasion with a valet and you need a program with a 2500 rpm and 30mph limit? Are you concerned in getting 100,000 miles out of the engine transmission and rear end? Some trucks just respond different to some adjustments. The closer you get to the limits of tuning the more likely you will hit quirks in your truck. That is most likely why you get some variation in the claimed hp that you see from tuners. High numbers make for happy buyers and disappointed owners when their truck doesn’t meet some expectation. These are all assumption/decisions that the factory made for you regarding our truck and you.

I have only worked with Jim at JDM. He has always answered the phone and if he has time, will be happy to share a lot of knowledge. Any time I need a change in a program, I just wrap the chip with a $20 bill and we are all happy. I run in a mode with lowered shift points, stock timing and mixtures, the vast majority of the time. The truck is smooth as silk to drive, plenty powerful for street driving and dam enjoyable to live with every day. On the other side it goes.

I have found that most of the people on this group are happy with their chip. Many have tried several chips and find that chips are different. Not necessarily better, just different. You have three choices.

1) Pick a tuner and accept what you get (like buying from J.C. Whitney)

2) Pick a tuner and tweak it with his help (like JDM/JL/PSP)

3) Pick several tuners and play (like JDM/JL/PSP/J. C. Whitney)

Hope this helps

Andy

They think to themselves..

Hmmm" Now how can I say the right things about MY CHIP, in the right words, and not sound like I am Bashing another" ...LOL too funny but well said by most

They all work, I have about 6 or 7 chips here now as paper weights on my desk..LOL

I have never been a fan of of chips. I may possibly give one a try on my L in the future.

But what everyone said is correct, all the 3 main chip guys are great, and each chip has it's own personality. So you choose the one that impresses you the most.

When I decide to do chip, I would go to Sal. I like what I have seen from him, plus I'm in NJ, only about an hour from him, convenience for me if want to dyno and get it tweaked to my liking.

Spiro - your so right about choosing our words. There have been just to many chip wars.

I appreciate everyones comments and I do really appreciate everyone choosing their words carefully.

I will have to make my own decision and it will be with one of the 3 tuners.

I just wish I lived closer so I could go talk and see them in person and get my trucked tuned personally.

Anyway again thanks for keeping it civilized.

reality is that if you drive a L you must have a chip. it wakes up the drivetrain and
it simply adds to the pleasure of L. i run
JL in my 01. it will go for reburn when the
PSP pulley is ready and at the same time the
shifting will be lightened up a bit. i personaly had great luck with JL and it is true that there are the big three(JL,PSP,JDM)
and then the rest. go for it.
