Lightbulb

Being from Houston, I have always put 160 degree thermostats in all my vehicles. Cooler engines live longer. Some have posted a bunch of BS about the computer not working right but they work fine. I'm looking at the electric fans but I want to run a fan on my IC rad. and I'm afraid the current draw from both radiator and ic radiator would drain the battery at the track. Remember an alternator doesn't make any current until it starts spinning at about 2000 rpm. All these fans pulling at idle in the staging lanes may require a battery charger and generator in the pits, something I don't care to lug out there in addition to the stuff I'm already taking. Sal, have you done any test on current draw with your fans and an ic fan to see how the battery holds up. I know you can run the ic pump with the engine off all night and the battery will still start the truck. I've done it by accident.

noelvm,

If you are reading higher than 13.2V at idle, the alternator is charging. Also, the 2000rpm number, uhhh, no. If that was the case when riding down the road at 45 mph the alternator light would be on. BTW, mine idles at 14.38V. If it ain't charging it breaking this little thing called Ohm's Law.

The alternator is more than capable of running an electric fan (~10amps)at idle, it will run your headlights (~20amps) won't it?

BTW, a good rule is to use the AmpHour rating of the battery. This number specifies how many amps for one hour the battery can sustain and still hold a residual charge (I think it's 11.2V if I remember correctly, just barely enough to crank an engine). I've found manufacturers generally over-inflate this number a tad.

Talking

Well, maybe it was a generator that didn't produce any current until 2000 rpm. It was one of them things.

Generator makes more sense. Atleast the one on my dad's '55 Chevy I drove in high school didn't do squat until you revved it.

Exclamation

Baby Jake I know what you mean on the A/C. Mine too, cools while moving, but when you come to a stop it just blows hot air until you get moving again. I don't know what causes it. Luckily I live in the country so it stays cool most of the time.

ZorPrime & Fast Gator,

Nope, Electrical Engineer. I guess that makes me a "spark master". LOL
