Intercooler Fans
My friend has installed 2 intercooler fans on
his L that pull outside air through our intercooler radiator therefore keeping the fluid alot cooler. He said it makes him run more consistant times at the track when your staging and waiting the fans can be cooling the intercooler radiator off!Is anyone else using this type of fan to cool there intercooler?

That is one of the things I have been playing. My plan is a little different. I am swaping the cooler for a larger unit with a fan and plan to force feed it with some ducting.

What he says is true as far as it goes, but the intercooler fluid trapped in the engine really heats up when you turn off the engine. I can't believe that after going to all that trouble, he didn't put a switch on the pump so he could run that with the engine off.

Matt,
I run three Spal fans with pump switch. It does help with consistency. I don't leave them on for very long though...afraid of a dead battery. I do race with the fans on and leave the fans and pump on for about ten min after racing.
I am thinking a coolant temp guage would be helpful to me.
noelvm, Did you put in a guage? If so, where did you place sensor?

Yes I put in a temp guage. I got an autometer electric guage that goes down to 60 degrees, guarenteed accurate its about 150.00. I mounted the temp sensor inline with the intercooler return line. Look on the pass side of the engine and there are two intercooler lines. One runs to the coolant tank. Don't use that one. The other line comes from the intercooler and goes to the intercooler radiater. Put sensor in this line and you get the temp of fluid coming out of the intercooler which is what you want. Average intercooler fluid temp here now is 90 degrees. One 1/8 mile run will raise this to 100 degrees and another quick pass will raise this to 110 degrees. This will play hell with your et. I'm cooling with a pump only and no fans and it takes 30-45 minutes to get the temp back down to 90 degrees. Since generally I don't have that much time. I try to make practice runs far enough apart to get the fluid temp to 100 degrees and set my dialin off that temp.
I have pics posted somewhere but all my pics are stored on Zing and Zing has been down for maintenance for about a week so you may have to wait for them to come back up to see the pics. Just went out to the garage and the temp guage I installed is Autometer Low Water temp gage # 5469. It is a 2 5/8 gage so it won't fit in the pillar pod. I bought a single 2 5/8 gage holder and mounted on one of the screws that held the remote plug in cord for trouble shooting and drilled a hole for the other side. Not easily visable there but you only need to look at to record the reading when you are stopped so it doesn't make any difference. I hooked up the lite that came with it by tapping into the ashtray lite wire which was easy to do once I figured out how to remove the ashtray bracket which involved pulling down two tabs so the piece would come forward.
