How safe/accurate are they?

How safe/accurate are they?
I've done mostly aesthetic mods to my L, only having 9,300 miles and not being a DD, i figure its time to add some power.
I'm going with the 4 lb.
I already have Brute Force CAI, Magnaflow Catback. I will be changing my plugs when I add the pulley as well.
My question is, rather than getting a dyno tune by a ford guy locally, how safe will it be if i decide to order from LFP or one of those guys with a preprogammed tune?
Also, I have an '01, what am I looking at to install the aluminum inserts(heard thats what I need to do) to help solve the thread issue?
