Small cloud of smoke on start up???
I've noticed that infrequently I get a small cloud of blue smoke on start up on my 01. I've got 5K on it and it's been doing it for 2 or 3K miles. No noises or poor performance accompanies it. It does it maybe 1 in 20 start ups. It does it on a warm and cold starts alike. It, by color, appears to be oil related. I don't know if I should be concerned or not... Does anyone else experiance this. BTW, The inside of my tips are sooty but not greasy. No oil consumption between changes too.

I noticed blue smoke when I followed my brother when he was driving my L (I blastphemed, I know!!!) It was very noticable but it dissipated fairly quickly.
When I called SVT, they explained that since the 'puter runs a rich fuel mixture, that if the truck is run fairly hard and then gets shut off for a while, that sometimes a condition is created called "fuel wash". This is when unburned fuel is sitting in the cylinder after shut down. I was told to idle the truck for a couple of minutes before shutdown and that should burn any excess fuel. I know idling for a couple minutes, concerning a turbo charger, is needed to stablize the oil temp, to prevent coking. But this is not the case for a supercharger. I always thought that blue smoke was a sign of oil burning, rich fuel mix burns black. I dunno, I think I am getting a line from SVT.

I often get a LOT of white smoke shortly after start-up. Usually right after I back out of the driveway, put it in "D", and stomp the loud pedal through the firewall. Is this normal?

Got a '99 with about 14500 miles. I get the smoke cloud too on start-up, but vary rarely. Usually see it on on cold or cool mornings after the truck sits outside all night or longer. Pretty good size cloud of blue smoke and it smells oily. Engine has rattle noise too in the morning almost sounding like a diesel engine . Rattle goes away after a bit.
I just assumed smoke was result of blow-by. No measureable oil consumption so far.

This is pretty typical of oil leaking past the valve seals. It occurs when the vehicle sits for a while and then is started. The high vacuum during idle will sometimes pull oil down past the seals, creating a short puff of smoke.
Typically found on Chevy's with "O" ring valve seals or the umbrella type that have dried out and cracked.

What about the oil that sits in the intake? The build up gets pretty heavy in there from what I've seen. The PCV vent tube that goes from the driver side valve cover to the intake sucks oil at WOT and just sits in there until it gets sucked into the engine.Just a thought.

I know that in the past Fords pushrod motors are notorious for leaking valve seals. They get hard and brittle, and break into little pieces. It is not at all uncommon to have the rear oil gallys plugged with pieces of the valve seal on old high mile motors.
My question is... what sort of valve seal, design and material... is Ford using on the cammers?
