Exclamation Terrible accident

http://www.wral.com/home/796966/index.html

This happened about 1.5 miles from my house. I live right by the high school where these kids were students.

Please be extremely careful if you are into street racing. I don't want this to happen to any of my fellow Lightning owners.

Your right, it didn't seem like they were racing. It more seemed like in-experience, especially if you watch the video. It looks like the kid lost control then oversteered causing him to lose all control. Still a shame.

Hopefully when I show my girlfriend she will see what excesive speeds can do if you don't have good enough tires and driving experience.

More money than sense, you don't learn to drive with those cars now days anyway I know you old timers grew up drifting Hemi's down dirt roads sitting on phone books. Times are different now.

I agree with you somewhat, kids nowadays shouldn't learn to drive with cars like that. My first car was a 4cyl Jeep Cherokee, and I loved it, slow as hell though. But perfect for me. But it's seems like the cars they make now are still different, I mean 4cyl economy cars like Accents and Civics and Corrollas and Focus and Escorts (etc) are very well capable of reaching speeds 80+, and those are the economy cars not sports cars. So really if they're gonna speed, they're gonna do it.

That's why Lightning Boy has a 4 cyl 5 spd Nissan PU to learn the ropes in. After he satisfies my criteria, THEN I'll let him drive the Mustang.

I wonder how the police estimate it was at 105 miles per hour....

Anyway, that is a shame....i used to speed lots of times with crappy tires until i knew what a speed rated tire was.....still a shame

That's exactly why I don't street race. My advice (though hard as it may seem): save it for the track!!

Wyldman...EXACTLY! This is exactly the way I feel. I do not have kids...but when I do.....I will preach and practice this....none the less....a very devastating story

Jeez, that's terrible. It can all come to an end in just the blink of an eye.

However, it doesn't sound to me like racing was involved at all...just high speed. The police simply said that racing was a possibility. A witness was close enough to say he saw the tire blow, so I would think that he would notice another car as well if they were both doing over 100. What a bad scenario anyway though...in a convertible with 4 people at over 100 mph and a tire blows...

It's a very sad story regardless.

I don't want to play devils advocate here BUT. And I'm only 39. I bought my first car when I was 14, and continued working on it. Finally when I was 16 1/2 I got it running. My 1st pass down the 1/4 mile was a 15.2 @ 128 mph (just alittle wheelspin off the line). Eventually I ran consistent low 10's, this was my first car. I do remember the first time I got on it though, what an unbelievable adreneline rush, especially with street tires. Anyway enough home movies, I'm just saying that it's not the CAR it's the DRIVER. Just like it's not the GUN, it's the PERSON HOLDING IT!

I agree that hi-po vehicles are NOT good for starter cars. My first car was a 85 Mercury Cougar 5.0. It was slower than snot. However when I was 17 I got a 91 LX 5.0 Coupe. The things that I did in that car leave me amazed that I didnt kill myself or someone else. If I am ever fortunate enough to reproduce I will not be buying any performance vehicles for them. Drive safe!
