its the sensation that makes you feel it is not really that fast. remember when you got in a go cart the first time, and it felt really fast? you were only inches off the ground so even though you werent going fast it felt like you were. the truck sits higher than most cars, so the sensation is not felt as much. but when you race a car you thought was fast you quickly realize that you are going faster than you think you are.

I thought the same thing.
Mine now has 3000+ and the other night some little bastard cut me off when I was merging on a freeway on ramp.
I had to pull over to a full stop to aviod a collision.
I was pissed so I stomped on it!
I lit the tires up for a 100 feet with smoke all the way.
They fly Brother, believe me, they fly

Sounds like you older folks who have driven muscle cars before find the Lightning "slow" based on prior cars. If I had a 69 Judge GTO (my favorite car) I'd find the L slow too! (Even though the L is faster than the Judge... but whatever.)
Personally, the L being my first muscle anything, it scares me how fast it is sometimes. Scares my friends even more... I'm in love!

The subjective sensation of speed in these things is entirely different than in a vehicle in which you sit close to the ground. At first I always underestimated my speed by about 20 mph, and the truck felt slow. I only thought I was doing about 95 when the cop clocked me at 118.

boy is this good news, I an new to these Lightning boards, I just got my Red '01 Lightning last Tuesday and it is unbelievably fun to drive, but just doesn't "feel" as fast as I had hoped. I have a 93 5.0 Mustang with a bone stock motor that runs 13.50's at 99.x mph and the truck doesn't feel as fast as the car. I have about 400 miles on the truck right now and I am trying (unsuccessfully so far) to drive it nicely during the break-in period (first few thousand miles). anyway, I had wanted to post about this but didn't want to admit to the possibility that my new 30,000 dollar truck was slower than everybody elses! anyway, I'll have it on a dyno and at Virginia Motorsports Park as soon as I think it's fully broken in. so I'll know for sure. also, I'm going to Carlisle PA this weekend for the All Ford show, maybe I'll see some of you there. have a nice day.

sincerely,
chris

Tundra I am new here and hate to question you, but why would the driver of the SS be shifting to 5th at 60MPH? At 60mph I am getting ready to shift my 98 SS into 3rd.

Im not Tundra but what I read was..

He pulled a car Length on the guy to about 60mph, then the guy started pulling back and once the guy hit 5th gear he was gone.

Maybe thats the way he meant it (I didn't read it that way).....but still 5th gear wouldn't come into to play until about 120MPH. An LS1 pulls like a bitch on the top end of the tach....so if the guy was shifting out as early as it would seem thats why Tundra pulled on him....or it may have been a LT1 car.
