Thumbs up Got the 01 :-)

Well, dropped off my beloved 99 today and picked up the 01. It was hard to let the 99 go, and I really liked it better. As they sat side by side at the dealer, I really was having second thoughts as the 99 looked so much better than the 01.

But as I drove away, the "new truck feeling" kind of took over the "miss my 99 feeling". The truck does handle better with the Bilstiens, but I could care less; I'm a drag racer. There are several things I DON'T like about the 01 though. The wheels and tailights will have to grow on me, but they are not so bad. The grille is ok, but I really like the 99-00 better. The two major things I don't like, is the change in the cup holder/ashtray design, and there is no compartment under the steering wheel (00s don't have it either) where I like to put my wallet. Things I do like however, is the overhead consle, dual visor setup, and the headlights. I'm sure in time I'll like it all, as I'm stuck with it now anyway .

There is one thing that I laughed my *** off when I saw. I went to put my filter kit on, and I noticed something really funny. That "larger" inner fender hole, is not a restamped piece of metal. It's been hand cut to a larger size. It looks like Leroy cut it larger with a hacksaw, on a hungover Monday morning. I'm surprised nobody else noticed this. Ok, it really doesn't look THAT bad, but you can tell for sure it was opened up. And what's even funnier, is that the hole on the other part of the fender behind, is the same size as the 99-00s, it hasn't been opened to match the cut one .

Hey sal, If you don't like those tail lights I'll trade you my stock 99 ones for your 01's.

That POS ashtray pulls out; the hole looks big enough to hold a MegaGulp when removed. You can order the dual cupholder w/bottom slideout ashtray that's used in 99 F-150's for $75 if you want. It does work. I might do that for a good change holder.

Question

With the improved airbox and intake path on the 01 is there still a performance gain from an aftermarket induction kit or can you get the same performance from a K&N panel filter in the stock box?

Wow, you should of seen the heads turn 2 years ago. Now days with 1999 or 2001 head/tail lights I hardly get noticed once a day if even that.

my red 01 gets tons of looks. its red. my 99 was in white, it didnt attract quite as much attention but still got a lot. the new taillights and wheels just keep growing on you til after awhile they look way better than the 99. the truck is definately something special.

I wasn't crazy about the wheels and tail lights when I got my 01 either. They have really grown on me though. The tails seem to bring the most conversation from people. You'll grow to like them better.

Hey Sal,
Congrats on the new '01! I noticed the smaller hole on the inside also. From what I remember looking at my '99, that is the main hole where all the air comes from. It is still the restricted area from what I see. Maybe Leroy should have opened that one up too.
Have fun with it. Are you going to Dyno it before making mods?

Later

Wayne, for the Mod Shootout, I put on a few mods that are currently available for the 01s, just to see how she runs for the weekend. I put on our PSP Lower Pulley, PSP Filter Kit, PSP 01 Chip (street program), and PSP Driveshaft loop. When I get to Spiros, we are going to put in the Factory Tech valve body using his garage pit ;-). I will also use the ET Streets. I would liketo see the truck hit the 12s with these mods, but we'll see. I plan to leave the truck otherwise untouched, as in no weight removeal. The truck should weigh in around 5000 lbs with me in it. Not looking for low ETs here, just looking to see how my truck will compare to others here that have the same simple mods. After I return, I DO plan to put it back to stock, and dyno test and track test all of the mods. Look for the upcoming info.
