Post Compression Ratio ?

Another one of my basic engine questions: hope this isn't getting annoying.
What exactly is the compression ratio? Higher or lower better?

For our Lightnings it's 8.4:1. Just the right amount if your looking to add a little more boost...or nitrous like others
