Speaker install
Gents, I just got some new Pioneers for the front and rears. The rears look simple enough but how do the door panels come off? Just thought I'd ask before tearing into them and finding an easier way later. Yes I checked the faq, and did a search.
Any pearls of wisdom are appreciated. Thanks Dennis.

If you tell me how to do the rears, I'll tell you about the fronts...
Pop off the plastic piece along the window frame (near your shoulder while seated). It pops off pretty easily. Once that's off there's a screw you can remove. Next, pop off the oval piece around the inside door handle and there's another screw under there. Now pop off the door lock/window button panel (pull off the front first, near the point). Unplug the door lock/window controls and now the door is readyt to come off. Pull straight up on the handle and it'll slip right off - unplug the complimentary light and you're in.
A hint: Roll the windows down first - it helps to guide in the door lock when replacing the panel...

Foor the doors, just grab and pull.
Actually the doors are very simple and Madhouse gave great directions. My friend has a Focas, that was a pain, theres like 8 screws per door.
Madhouse - to get the rear panels, preferably remove the seats so it you have more room. Then pull panels of slowly so that you don't damage anything. I really don't know how to take off the rear panels, guess I'll figure it out when the time comes. But I'm gonna do my speakers and amp and subs all at the same time to make it easier.

Shorty,
Ditto to what was posted. Just make sure you lift the whole panel upward first, then pull it away. If you don't, you'll break the little arms off. You'll see what I mean.
It's been a while since I did the speakers, so I can't remember the rears to well, but hopefully somebody will jump on here and detail it for you. Just push the little pin inward on the retainers about 1/8" and NO MORE, or it will fall where you can't reach it, so be careful. Then the whole pin comes out. That's mainly what I wanted to tell you. And I remember that trim by the upper rear window being a real bi*ch, causing me busted knuckles when it broke loose. It has those metal clips with the teeth that just pull away like the door window trim does. The seatbelt needs to be unscewed to.

Thanks guys, the front speakers took less than an hour to install. They sound great. The rears are a little different. I still haven't finished. I've got the passenger side undone but it was tough. The best way is the longest, take the seat out. I think I busted one of the retaining pins already. Time to go to ford parts. Ford makes some rugged plastic...nothing budges. I'll finish tonight. Right now time to go get some beer and make room in the garage. Thanks again
I put the door speakers in a few weeks ago. They really do make a huge difference. I was planning on putting the other two in over this long weekend, but you guys are making me wonder if I should let someone else do it.
Shorty - where do I start on the rears? BTW - I noticed you said Pioneers. I got four TS-A6865's. What are you putting in?

rons - Thanks, man. Those were good, detailed instructions. But, they were for an extended cab. The front door instructions were right on. The back side of the regular cab has the speakers on the rear wall, with panels that stretch the width of the cab.

I put 4 TS-A6865's in my 99, and they work great. The stock deck actually sounds half decent. Needs more bass, but is 10 times better than the crap speakers that were in there...

Just got finished installing all four speakers. What a remarkable difference. This was one of the best upgrades you can do. Next stop, bazooka, amp, head unit.
Madhouse, I installed the exact same speakers. As said earlier, the fronts are easy but the rears aren't that difficult. I didn't remove the seats or seatbelts. Hopefully I can help. This is what I did.
1. Remove the plastic utility box with the three retaining screws on the bottom. If you have the stock CD changer, it's easier to remove the box from the passenger side by lifting up and then out.
2. Remove the door rocker panels. Pull up from the front and they just pop off.
3. Pull the door/cab rubber seal half way off so you have access to the rear cab panels inards.
4. You should now be able to take the panels off by removing the retaining plugs one at a time. VERY IMPORTANT as gforce said, "Just push the little pin inward on the retainers about 1/8" and NO MORE".
This knowledge makes life alot easier.
There are retaining plugs, one on each side, on the inside of the middle/side panels that need to be released before pulling off.
The panel that runs parallel below the rear window has three simple caps the just pull off with the panel. This needs to come out.
I won't try to describe, confuse, any further on sequence of panel removal. It becomes clear once you start. This gave me more than enough room to do the install.
Good speakers. Circuit city has got them for "Buy one get the other set for half cost".
Thanks gents. Dennis

I did the rears yesterday - that wasn't too bad. Man, if anybody's thinking that they want to swap the speakers, but feel that the difference won't be worth it - do it! Just changing out the speakers gives it a whole new sound. I'll do an amp later, but I'm really pleased with the new sound...
