2002 Lightning
Hi guys,
I'm going to be purchasing a 2002 Lightning next spring and have a bunch of questions for you guys.
I just finished reading the June MM & FF, they are really high on the 2001 Lightning.
My first question is did they really fix all the reliabilty issues? It sounds like the intercooler is better, did they beef up the tranny at all?
Secondly performnce mods, what works? The 01 comes with a bigger MAF, does it still need an aftermarket one? Is the 01 chipable? I read somewhere it might not be.
In the FAQ on this site they reccomend against changing the blower pulley, what are the real world experiences with this? I read somewhere people were actually losing power with free flowing exhaust because of lack of back pressure, this doesn't seem possible with all that torque?
Basically the day I buy the truck I will be ordering a bunch of mods so I want to be prepared now. I want this truck to scream. How are the 01 models? What mods work? How much faster are the 01 models in stock trim? Thanks in advance!

Scott,
You might consider holding out for the '03 L. I have it from a number of reliable sources and others on this board that there is going to be a redesigning of the entire F-150 line. Slated changes for the L in '03 is supposed to be a 3-valve head, bigger & meaner S/C, etc. It looks to be an interesting year for the L community!
Stay tuned...

2002Lightning,
None of us really know what's coming down the pipeline until it really happens. But I'm just gonna throw my .02 out. If indeed they do make an 03 Lightning, who knows, but if so and it is totally redesigned and has more tacos, then personally, I would not want to buy an 02. But it would be the pitts to not buy and 02 in the hopes of an 03 only to find they don't make an 03. I read your response that you just don't want to wait so long for an 03, well I don't know your finances and whether you can afford an L sooner than 02, but maybe you might consider purchasing a used 99 or 00 for now and then move into an 03 down the road. I have seen some very reasonably priced low mileage used ones out there. Or you might consider locating a new holdover 00 for a great price. I've had my 00 for alittle over a year now and plan on keeping it till I see what the 03's are like and then move into one of those. Good luck to you.
