Question Power Steering unit

I took my truck in today to the dealer and they could not find the problem with the noisy power steering unit. They said they only hear it when they are inside the cab and hear nothing when outside. They went on line (is whet they told me) to find out from ford what it could be. After 3 hours they replaced the power steering unit and low and behold the noise remains.?? Now i have an appointment for them to change the gear box???. could this be the problem, its under warrenty (by 3 days). The unit growls when the wheel is turned either way and the idle seems to lower to much also. Sorry for the long post but this seems like it should be a no brainer but NOTTTT

My 01 Bolt makes the same noise. Left turn, Grrrr..... Right turn, Grrrr.... Do a search on power steering noise. I think loud power steering noise is normal to F-150's in general.

I have a 2000 with 650 miles on it, and it is has the power steering noise. It does not sound like the pump, it sounds more like it is coming from the steering box itself. The noise is not very loud and I only notice it when I turn the wheel when I am not moving.

It is more like an air sound in the steering box as opposed to the whine one hears from the power steering pump -- it will be going in soon.

For as long as I can remember with all the Fords (and Lincolns) my family has owned including my own 2 vehicles, they have always made a groaning sound when you turn the wheels and also make the idle dip a bit too. I don't know if there is something wrong with yours but here is what I did when I got my truck: Started it up, (thought to myself---wonder if Ford made the P/S noise go away yet?) NOPE!!!

Mine makes the same noise. So did my 99 F350 and 97 F150. Someone told me it had something to do with the hydralics lines. Something about the pressurized fluid passing over a textured surface inside the hoses.

My 99 Lightning is dead silent from the p/s.

I did have to change the pitman shaft seal myself, as it was leaking.
For $10 in parts and a half hour labor it wasn't worth it to go back to the dealer.

Even after bleeding all the air out, it's still quiet.

Oh jeez, I wish I hadn't read this post..something else to go wrong. Mine is dead silent clear to the stops even though it has a mind of it's own on worn roads and wanders horribly.

gforce don't worry i have yet to drive a truck that did not wander some on rough and worn side roads. You could try some adjustable high per. shocks. This would help.

My 99 makes the power steering noise, its kinda like a screching, its made the noise since I've had it, and now it has 33,000 miles. It doesnt really bother me if anything its annoying.
