my 2000 and now my 2001 (got rid of 2000) L came thru with alot raised bumps. it turns out this is rail dust. i used the zaino clay bar and clayed both trucks. got rid of everything, and made paint much smoother. you have to wax afterwards, but zaino on top of clayed finish can't be beat.

if you run your hand across the area in question, and feel raised bumps, it maybe the rail dust. if it is INDENTED, like pitting, it is something else. i am not sure if the L has a protective cover for most of the hood when shipped, but it makes sense that it would.

if it is pitting, does it go down to bare metal ?

No it is actual pitting but it doesn't go through the paint, it looks like just through the clear. You can fee the pits with your fingernail.
Thanks for your reply

i have had good results with Meguires Scratch remover, a mild polish/compound that does NOT damage surrounding paint nor the clear coat. i wonder if you tried that on the area in question to see if it would blend the pitting into surrounding paint.

i just don't like dealers touching my truck, as they have messed it up in the past. also, try a good paint shop that does custom work to get their opinion.

Good Luck,

Post Strange clear coat damage on top six inches of hood.

I bought a used 9 L back in Oct. so I am not the original owner. About a month after I bought it I noticed the 6 inches of the hood closet to the windshield had pitting damage in the clear coat. It looks like it was done during transport from the factory because there is an absolute straight line across the hood where the damage starts and stops. It looks as though there was a protector decal that covered most of hood and the part that wasn't protected got in some acid rain or something. There is even a perfect straight line etched across the hood.
Does anybody know if the L's come from the factory with these protective covers on the hood. Also would I have any luck getting this taken care of under warranty. Has anybody else had this problem?
