Uh oh, I think this is going cost some dough
Got home this afternoon and found a message on my ans. machine from the guy rebuilding my tranny, "Hey, Old Timer, you do good work, come on over and take a look at your tranny". So I hops in my Mitsubishi Galant rental and, carefully modulating the throttle to avoid whiplash, NOT, I drive on over and survey the damage. Every clutch in the tranny was fried, except for reverse (normally I don't do too many smokey burnouts in reverse, as a matter of fact only one that I recall, and that one was pretty embarassing). He didn't expect to find that degree of damage, and he had to get on the phone to Raybestos to ship some of their good clutches overnight air. He was clearly amused that an old fart like me could drive with such reckless abandon as to destroy a perfectly good tranny in only 12,000 miles. The good news is that Ford did use a lot of good, strong steel parts in the tranny, not cheap aluminum parts that won't hold up. Also, he talked to the guy rebuilding my torque converter, and I do have the good two disk clutch pack. He hopes to have the t.c. back and the tranny buttoned up by Friday. I told him to take his time, its going to be difficult to give up this fire snorting Galant.

I had the same problem on my 99 that my clutches were fried it cost them around $400 to fix it according to my waranty bill, but when i got it home it still would not shift properly so they ordered a new valve body kit for it for around $200 and the truck shifted just like when it was new again with no problems!

Fried my 99 at 22000 miles, Ford put in a new one, no rebuild. Works great, but so did the first one for 22000 miles.
I think they need to rewrite the maintanence chapter of the owners manual to include changing out the innercooler at 15000 and the tranny at 22000. They might even put them under the "wear catagory" of parts.

I fried the torque converter in my 4R70W and sent the whole transmission of to Art Carr for a performance rebuild. Racing clutch packs, 1 piece input shaft, 2400 stall converter, etc. all the good stuff. I feel it is pretty bullet proof now and love the way it performs. It wasn't cheap, but they did a nice job and I have confidence the tranny will hold when I bury the pedal.

Speaking of us old farts ***ing up stuff, I took my Classic Roadsers Cobra out to test the new Demon carb the other night. I spun the car doing a left turn.
Full throttle while not going straight, it made the 1-2 shift, an I was completely sideways to traffic. I didn't hit anything, so I just nailed it again and spun it back around. The I could hear the screams from the poeple stopped at the light. No harm done, and no cops saw it.
When I got home there was a line of trans fluid following me. Oh well time to check the trans.

OK, gforce, posted pic of most of the clutches to my Zing album. To see it you will need to click on the link in my sig and then select picture #27, "Ford clutch plates". The pic isn't that hot, lots of back light reflecting off the shiny metal. That's the key word, shiny, there's virtually no clutch material left on any of them. I don't know how the damned thing managed to work at all, but I could tell it was having a hard time of it. And I can't tell ya which ones are the 1-2 clutch pack, they all look pretty much alike to me, they were all fried.
And 1bad, I wouldn't let a Ford "technician" anywhere near this tranny. They would just install the oem junk clutches, and I would have the same problem again pretty soon. I think I probably could have got a new one under warrantee, but imo that's just asking for more trouble. I believe that most of you with chips that override the Ford "torque reduction" on the 1-2 shift are going to eventually wind up with the same problem. Maybe not, if you keep the line pressure high enough to slam those clutches together. But I am going the same route as Flats and having tranny and torque converter built with racing parts. Only diff. is I'm not raising the stall speed that high, I want to be able to hook up on the F1s on the street.
btw, Flats, that's a nice looking truck, even with the Dodge stripes.
What kind of times are you recording?

Hey George, glad to hear that your truck is almost done. How about a trip up to Fomoso to test it out once you get it back???

Even in reverse, sixpipes?
Jim, if you haven't done it, I would advise against it. I never saw such a godamned complicated piece of apparatus in my life. There were parts spread out over three workbenches. No wonder Ford just replaces the fried ones, I doubt very much that many dealers have a mechanic competant to do it. They probably ship them back to Saginaw and heve them rebuilt by someone who is competant to do so, then install it in your Lightning. Actually, nothing wrong with that idea, its just too bad that Ford doesn't put the Raybestos blues in them in the first place, and save us all a lot of grief. I think it takes a mechanical genius to rebuild one of these things.
And Marcus, I have more stuff to do after the tranny. Going to take it to Danny Swanson and put on the Cobra t.b., and maybe the Racelogic traction control. I also have a trip to Hawaii scheduled on May 26. So it looks like the first time I go to Famoso will be June 9, unless I go up for the Friday night grudge races on June 8 for some of that nice, cool night air, and stay overnight in a motel so I can run on the 9th, too. The more I think about it, the better the plan seems to me.

George, no I haven't done it yet, but I tell you this 1-2 shift is getting worse by the day. I swear it has to be costing me a good .1 or .2 at the track. And I've also noticed a bit of play in the driveline when I shift it to reverse that it didn't have when it was new. I'd be the one to have a burned R clutch, wait and see. Not sure where it is so I'll crawl under it while someone puts it in R so I can pinpoint it. I guess power has its price. Sad part is out of 3 SVT dealers where I live, only 1 is qualified to remove the S/C for the I/C replacement - so you know the tranny would be out of the question on a rebuild.
Jim
Think I figured out how to post the pic.
P.S. Went down to the shop today, and learned that my torque converter did not come back yet.
Will be Moday at the earliest before the L. is back together. Another 3 days of driving this Mitsu p.o.s. But, checked out the new clutch disks from Raybestos, and they look sweet. I don't mind waiting a little to get something that will hang together. And Ford should give me some kind of appreciation for doing this out of my pocket, instead of demanding a warrantee fix.
