Custom audio work enquiry..
Hey Guys,
Since the red rocket has been stored for the winter (only 1-2 months left!) I have been seriously thinking about putting in a good system. I was once a carpenter and have (or should say did have) a fair bit of skills with tools. A carpenter that works for me was telling me he has built boxes for his toyota many times.
I have very little knowledge in custom systems...any help? I was looking at 2-10" kickers (cant remember which model) and a couple kicker 6x9s in the doors.
I'd like to have the box run from door to door, have the amp bolted/concealed within or on the box and the stock 6 disc somehow intertwined within the box, maybe have a small port/opening which it can hide in. The goal here is to not look flashy and be suttle, but sound quite nice.
Any thoughts/opinions or ideas would be appreciated

will it be made of strictly wood? are you goin to cover it in carpet, suade, or sand and paint? are the 10's shallow mount or reg? what kind of amp do you plan on gettin? make sure yo umatch the ohm load of the subs to the amp. you dont want to burn up your amp. i'm not good with drawing stuff with paint or photo shop but i can try to draw you up some ideas. send me an email... platinumdragon469@yahoo.com
well from what i was reading i was going to double up 3/4" MDF, the kicker subs im not quite sure of the clearnace yet or what cubic feet they need for maximum performance.... nor do i know the amp, when im off work this weekend i plan on looking into more detail.
I would like to do something a little more unique rather than just carpet, maybe suede or something different. I was hoping someone would already have some good ideas regarding the reg cab setup and if theyve done any custom boxes....I dont want to put my 6 disc under the seat, like I said i'd like to integrate the enter thing in one sleek piece. ALso will just replacing my stock speakers with a good set of 6x9 kickers be enough?

MJG, IMO you really don't need to double up 3/4 MDF, for the type of in cab system you would do in an L' , 3/4 is fine, as for the OEM size it's 5x7 or 6x8 front and rears, I believe 6x9's will require a little love from a metal nipper, IMO say 5 1/4 components on a a custom plate would b the ticket for the fronts and a good quality 5x7 for rear fill toss in a nice 10 or 12 and say 500 watts and you should have a nice system, there are so many options available for cables to heads units ect.. have at it. T
first off like todd said there is no need to double up 3/4" it is alot stronger than you think. with the clearence issuses of a reg cab you wont have enough room for a sub that can flex 3/4"
one thing to keep in mind...a box that runs door to door...is probably goin to cover up the rear speakers. so upgrading them or even keeing them hooked up might be worthless..maybe upgrade the doors and get some kick panels. i do like the 5 1/4 idea. like the infinity's that have a plate with the 5 1/4 and a tweeter that way you dont ahve to drill any extra hole to mount tweeters if you dont want to. and kick panels will usually have a spot for tweeters as well...so that would give you 2 tweeters a 5 1/4 and whatever the kick panal is that you buy. i think would sound pretty nice..an idea for the cd changer...put each sub behind each main seat...in their own sealed box..have the back piece run all the way across and behind the middle seat make a litte box and have the cd change there...it would look clean and have funtionallity b/c you could reach it from the drivers seat very easy if you needed to..then you could mount the amp to the front of that box. now the only thing not figure into the equation would be a capicitor...depending on your amp and what you will be pushing you might need to get one of those..it will save you battery and even more importantly your altenator..keep me updated and i will able to give you more ideas as you know what you will be getting hope that helps

agree that you don't need double 3/4 mdf... also I can't see how you could fit 2-10"'s with double 3/4 mdf with enough volume in the box. anyways.. 3/4mdf is more than enough. but why not try some fiberglass? If you can take out the seats and do it safely it'll be naaaiiicceee. Then build some for some components for the front (o:
thanks for the info guys, but as i said, i have absolutely NO knowledge with this kinda stuff whatsoever. You might as well be speaking spanish to me. I just want a good system with very little flashyness to it, also I do not want to mess with my trucks electrical system, i don't wanna mess up my pats system and next thing you know my baby is gone from the driveway one morning.
Also on another note, I just put on my tonneau this past weekend, only 899 with paint! I got them to blank out and paint the lock pad and I have mocked up a ford emblem, going to cost me 100 bucks to have a custom fit factory replica ford emblem but it will be worth it
