Red face You think We've Got Problems?!?

I was looking at Z06Vette.com the other day and came across this post:

http://www.z06vette.com/phpBB/viewto...095&forum=1&12

I think I'd rather deal with an Intercooler Replacement than have to get the rings replaced on a new Z06. Whew, that would ache. And where does Engineering at Chevrolet get off on saying that burning a quart of oil in 500 miles is the break point. If I understand it correctly, one should be burning very little oil between oil changes, especially on a vehicle that tells you when to change it, not a quart per 500.

Just pointing out that the "grass isn't always greener".

A qt every 500? What a smoker that would be! Even the one's that burn a qt every 2k smell awful when you're behind one. Don't you love the crap they feed us? My L is 1/4 qt every 2-3k.

That doesnt seem right to burn that much oil at all, no matter what the damn engineers say. Can you say class action lawsuit?

I think Im starting to like those Z06 owners. His car is burning a quart of oil every 500 miles and his only concern is if GM will change the cam for him at the same time they replace the rings. That sounds like something I would try.

I admit I have been lurking over there for quite sometime. If I ever race one, I hope to smoke him to 80mph. and make a quick right or left turn. If you don't do this, you'll more than likely get a nice oil bath.

Only car I know that burns a bit of oil is an RX-7. Then again, those things hold like what, 12 quarts...wierd rotary engines.

Guys, I have to admit I was _thiiisss_ close to buying a Z06. I'm not saying that b/c I didn't, that they are bad cars.

But...the primary reason I got scared off (I was on that board for literally 3 months getting detailed info privately from some of the list members) was b/c of the oil consumption issue.

At the time I decided _not_ to buy one, GM had just come out (supposedly) and said that they would be sending out a new ring set and that the local GM dealer would take apart the engine and replace the rings. Yeah, right. I'm going to let the same guy who works on that Cavalier over there pull the motor and replace the rings in my LS6 engine. Whatever!

Anyway, I settled on a 12k mile '98 Saleen S351, and don't regret that decision.

Hopefully in '02 the LS6 will be alleviated of the oil control problems.

Pontiac dealer told my friend that it is perfectly normal for his T/A to burn a quart in 1000 miles. He went to another dealer and was told the same thing. For the normal driver, there wouldn't be any oil left by the time it needs to be changed. This issue and poor build quality is the reason I choose my 01 L instead of a Camaro SS.

Not to go too tangent here, but I’ve got 15,000 miles on my 99 Lightning and I can’t tell if I’m burning any oil. The level on the dipstick stays basically in the same place, I haven’t stopped to notice any markings on the dipstick, 1q, 2q, ect.

How would you know how many quarts downs you are?

The only way I can fathom this is to drain your oil and measure it, but this wouldn’t account for residual oil still left in the nooks and crannies.

WA 2 FST: The guy that works on the Cavalier is not the guy that would be replacing the rings in the Z06. Every Chevy dealer that sells Corvettes must have a certified Corvette mech. Don't blame you for not wanting one after hearing about the oil consumption problem.

Question

I have also been lurking at the vette board. There are some very intersting posts regarding oil consumption.
Personally I believe that a lot of the oil consumption comes from having synthetic oil in the motor from the factory. I have seen a number of bikes come through the shop that had synthetic oil early in life that used oil.

just my .02

I agree with Marvin, no motor should be broken in on synthetic.
The Redline 10w30 I use in my 99L isn't being burned, I waited 8k to put in the synthetic to be sure it was broken in on dino oil. It says right on the bottle not to use for a minimum of 3k.

Here's a point: What would Chebby do once all these pretty new z06's won't pass a smog test? All that oil is going to poison the converters and the 02 sensors over time. Along with the EGR system getting plugged with wet oil deposits.

Eric, the difference between minimum and maximum level points(about 1/2" apart) on the dipstick usually represents a quart.

After 43 warrantee actions on my 98 C5 6sp I got rid of the plastic piece of crap and got my 01L. I've never regreted it. Every major system on the C5 failed at least once.
