Hey guys.
Here's my experience with this problem. I have only had my truck to the track twice. The first time was at FFW in Dallas in Oct. '99 where you had literally 3 hours in b/w passes.
Last weekend I raced it and ran into this problem. It felt like more than anything like timing was pulled out of it...or the fuel was richened up, or both. I've working on EFI blower motors for over 7 years now, and it really felt like what happens when the tune is just really off. Very doggy after the 1-2 shift and then the rest of the way down the track.
Maybe Sal can shed some light on this, but unless the blower has some sort of wastegate, I don't see how it can physically bleed off boost. Seems to me that it would more than likely be a timing/fuel issue where the EEC would just pull lots of power out of the motor.
Anyway, I don't beat on my truck all the time, but this phenomena has never happened to me on the street...no matter how many stoplights I race at in a row. :-P
My thinking is that on the street, the truck is always running and thus you're getting the constant fluid flow through the trans and cooler (even if it IS inadequate). Also, since you're typically moving on the street, you get good airflow across the cooler itself making it more efficient.
Shutting the truck down in the staging lanes would be my normal practice in a vehicle I was racing, but I think this actually hurts with this one b/c of what Sal mentioned. No fluid being circulated at all. It will actually warm up in the case after a pass if you shut it down. Then when you fire the truck up, I bet the fluid is over the temp it should be, the computer gets a signal and it retards power big time come your next WOT pull.
Just my $.02...or a little more in this case.

My point the above post? Yes, there was one hidden in there somewhere...
I seriously doubt you will ever have this type of problem even in spirited street driving.
I know many of you will drag race yours a lot more than I will, but I don't see it being a real problem issue for the type of driving I do (and maybe many of you as well).

Hey Wes, Sal here. The 99 Lightning uses what's called a "Supercharger By-pass Solenoid". It is mounted in series with the vacuum source that works the by-pass valve. Anytime the PCM sees something that causes it to go into failsafe mode, the first thing it does is shut the boost off.

Since the temps are the problem what would stop the synthetic fluid from reaching the higher temps that open the bypass. I would think it couldn't hurt but not necessarily
remedy this problem.vMaybe a pump that could contuinue circulation after shut down. Or as is the thread leans towards a larger cooler.
Does the increased temperature of the tranny
require more frequent fluid changes than the manual indicates? Does the program tend to protect the tranny fluid from deterioration while saving it from damage..more than likely.

Wes: When it goes into this mode you can tell with a glance at the boost gauge. You can have your foot in the S/C blades but the boost gauge is sitting dead on "0". BTW, I have had it happen on the street a couple times.

Has anyone tried to install an electric fan over the trans cooler? I don't have my L yet so I'm not familar with the layout, but from what I've read in the different posts is that the problem seems to occur after extensive idling or engine off conditions. The fan would help in that regard. Besides, it surely cannot cause any problems at the dealer in regards to warranty work.

Good point, Gilbert.
That is one of my biggest concerns since the truck is still under warranty...if you install an aftermarket trans cooler, the dealer will balk big time if you have a problem with the trans.
Don't want to go down that road to be honest.
From what I could tell there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of room in there, but then again, you really wouldn't need a big fan.

Hey all, Sal here. Actually, the kit that I am working on uses a 6 pass (6 rows of cooling tubes) cooler with a fan mounted on it. The stock cooler is a tiny little 2 pass cooler, and I'm surprised they even bothered to put something that small on
. The will be a bolt in deal, complete with mounting brackets and everything. Piece of cake to install.

One question just came to mind: would a bigger trans cooler also take more horsepower away? How much do you think the stock one takes and how much more do you think yours will (Sal)?
