Thumbs down Hit and run

Hey all, being a bolt owner, and having a thing for speed, i also owned a 2000 Yamaha R-1. Let me just say that this is the nicest bike i ever owned. Well long story short, 4 weeks ago i pulled her out of the garage for the first ride of the season, little did i know it would also be my last. Washed her, and decided to put some fresh fuel in her, so on goes the helmet, and off i go. Get about 4 miles from my place coming up to a intersection, see headlights coming from my right, so i slow down. Person comes to a stop at said intersection, pulls forward and stops again, so i slow down, and flash my highbeams so he can see me. Person stops again, so i downshift to go on thru, get 10 feet from the truck, and they pull out in front of me. Well in the next 3 seconds i tried to save the bike, put her into a side slide to try to miss the truck and go down the road he just turned off of, no such luck! Hit the truck at about 35-40mph in the side slide, right in the bed. Person in truck drove off and left me for dead!!! Did i mention this is in the country, 7 miles from any town? Lucky for me their was someone coming from the west on the same road, and he saved my life! Went thru 10.5hrs of surgery, and 9 pints of blood. The whole bright spot of the deal is that i got to leave the trama center in a beautiful Black 99 Bolt!!! In addition, they still havent caught theperson in the truck, and i will be in a leg brace for another 8-9 months, kinda sucks me being a Ford tech and all. Just thought you all should know. P.S. Sorry this was soo long. Shawn

I am so sorry to hear that, Shawn. I hope you mend quickly, and I hope they find the S.O.B. who did it and throw his *** in jail, so you can then sue the s**t out of him.

I hope they get the guy, and hope you will make a full recovery. I myself love bikes and have had a few, but after a close call myself, it is just the truck for me now.

Rumba83,

That’s such a sad story.

There you are laying in the middle of the road out in BFE left to die.

I suspect the person in the truck thought; well there goes my insurance rates and split.

I’ve recently noticed the state of America, it seems like everyone is only out to squeeze the last dime out of each and every one of us, from the insurance companies, to the grocery, to the gas pump.

20 years ago the guy in the truck probably wouldn’t of split because he wouldn’t have been penalized to high heaven for the accident. It probably wouldn’t have even entered his head, now we live in a paralyzed state of fear from paycheck to paycheck all in the name of large companies and the bottom line.

Just imagine what it’s going to be like in 20 years from now if this all continues?

As of today the term mankind is non-existent IMO.

I hope all goes well. I myself have given up street bikes after 17 years of riding. I have personally been witness and first on the accident site twice in the last two years, both whom died at site, and said that was enough. So I am selling all 3 street bikes, a 1986 V Max, 86' VFR 750, and a tricked out 79'GS 1000. Life sucks sometimes, but I think its better this way.
Speedy recovery!!!!!!

Sorry to hear that. Sounds exactly like what happened to a co-worker. He looked them right in the eye at the stop sign, pulled out, then they just ran right into him. I will not take that chance. I've been on them and know if I had one over the past ten years, I'd probably be dead by now. If we *all* rode motorcycles, it'd be different.

Someone has to have serious mental issues to do that to another human being! These people should be shot if found.

Rumba,

I wish you a speedy recovery. What a terrible way to start off spring. I hope they find and crucify that IDIOT!! Here are before and after pics of my former bike while I was stationed in San Diego.

A lady made a left turn in front of oncoming traffic (me in the left lane and a van in the right). The van and I were running approximately the same speed and . Suddenly she realized she couldn't make it and stopped in my lane hoping to gun it and "slip" infront of the traffic behind us. I had nowhere to go but into her bumper head-on at 35-40. Two flips over the handlebars and landing face-first and spread eagle in the van's lane. he stopped thankfully but had to leave due to carrying immediate action radio traffic to Long Beach... Thank heavens I had just left the military base that requires all safety gear to be worn while on property(Full face helmet, gloves, reflective vest, long sleeves, etc.)

Other than a good case of road rash on the knees, a destroyed Bell helmet, and a gimp for a couple weeks, I made a full recovery. I pray that you do as well despite the seriousness of your injuries.

Respectfully,

Robert

Glad you are on the road to recovery. I gave up the motorcycle 10 years ago because of accidents and my age. No jokes please, it just takes TOO LONG to recover and the cold damp morning are a real bi*#h with the hips, knees and ankles. Get on your feet real soon for that new child of yours. Later from the Gator.

I am sorry to hear that. Hope you make a healthy recovery.

The last thing on my mind in a traffic accident is insurance rates. Some people. Anything that has a $ value to it can be taken away, and replaced. Now the hit and run guy will always be looking over his shoulder.

at this rate, in another 20 years, the world will be like the movie the road warrior where it is every man for himself attacking each other for gas. sorry about the accident. If and when the hit and run person dies, god will deal with him.

Thumbs up

Thanks for all of your support, it really means alot. The main cause of my pain is my left leg, that is broke in 5 places, also broke my right forearm. Lucky for me that i did'nt sustain any internal ingeries at all. Believe me, I want to find this person and ask him why he left me for dead? If there was'nt another guy coming from the other direction, the emt's said i would have bled to death in less than 10 min. That would have been real cool to explain to my little girl!(old lady is due in less than a week) I guess it takes all kinds of people huh? Police are thinking that it may be a migrant worker from Texas, and if thats the case i'm screwed!! But hey, I still have my sense of humor, and my leg, it could of been a lot worse. Later Shawn

Rumba':

Add me to the "...been there, done that..." list. Sorry to hear about your mishap, and likewise to the carnage inflicted on that mechanical jewel of an R1. Here's a plan - remove the motor from the carcass of the bike and transplant it into an old MG midget or something else incredibly light and flimsy (maybe one of those Porsche speedster kit cars). Put a loud pipe on it and enjoy tooling around in your screaming 150 HP, 1800 lb, 13,000 RPM fire-breather. Thought about this for a LONG time while I was rolling around in my wheelchair recovering from the stupdity of a "fellow driver" a few years ago.

You will come to appreciate the dual miracles of evolution and instinct after a while. Miraculously, the human body has ABSOLUTELEY NO capacity to recall pain. You can remember to "5-digit accuracy" smells or tastes from your kindergarten years, but try as you might, you can't recall painful sensations from yesterday. I recall that laying on a fire ant hill with a shattered femur, snapped humerus, split astralagus, and pulverized navicular hurt like a mother-humper, but I sure can't recall exactly WHAT it felt like. It really doesn't seem so bad now, looking back on it. This inability to recall pain is responsible for the success of the human species in general - no woman would have a second (or third) baby otherwise.

Things will only get better, trust me. And if you're really lucky, some day you'll run into that A-hole that you T-boned and kill him. Slowly.
