Question valvetrain noise concern

Hey guys. I'm trying to figure out a noise that I have in my L. I've talked to Jim III @ JDM on the phone a few times trying to explain it, which is very difficult. I want to take it up there to actually let them listen to it, but it's like 700miles round trip I haven't had time to take off due to any injury I had at work a few months ago and had to use the last of my vacation. Anyway though, the noise is heard when you accelerate slowly, and it gets louder right before it shifts, once it shifts, it quiets back down. It can't be heard at idle, it's also heard cruising 50-70mph on very light accelerations. It sounds like a rattling noise. Jim thought it might be the torque converter or the cats, I replaced the cats, noise still there. I had a few techs at my dealership listen to it and one thinks it's the cam followers, and the other thinks it's my 2.3L KB. It can also beard heard at idle reving it between 2000rpm-2500rpm. So I'm trying to figure out if it's something I can fix or if I should just make a trip to JDM and have them take a listen to it. I tried to get a price on cam followers, but they have to be bought with the cylinder heads. So if anyone can help out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Run it with the blower belt removed and you can confirm/eminate the KB as being suspect.

Exclamation

Actually I did try that a while back. I took off just the blower belt, then tried it with the serpentine and blower belt off, didn't help, so I guess that eliminates the blower eh??

Yea, pretty much so. Did the kb spin freely by hand with no binding or play? You might get an engine stethoscope and listen in the valve covers with it running and see if you can pinpoint anything coming from the valve train.

Are you sure it's not detonation? Doesn't really sound like it considering it happens at idle. Unusual noises can drive one crazy trying to locate!

I have heard some noisy aftermarket Torque convertors. But usually you hear that at idle. Could be a little bit of slack in the timing chains due to worn guides, tensioners, or arms. Have we ruled out a slight header leak?

I can sell you cam followers seperatly but that is probably not going to help, unless we know for sure its them.

Has there been any power loss?

It is really hard to say with out hearing the truck in person. We will be in Richmond in June for FFW.

Hey Jim, a friend of mine and I changed out the guides and tensioners about a year, we checked the chains but didn't see any grooves/abnormal wear on them. I had considered a possible header leak, but wasn't sure. Is there a certain way to do it, like do I need to back the bolts off first, then re-tighten them?? or just try and tighten them again??

Yeah slapping parts won't help, that's for sure :-)

It still runs as strong as it did when I got it back from you guys tuning it. I ran four passes back to back, 11.874, 11.792, 11.774, 11.746, , last april on the street tune. I did notice that it seems to over rev a little in first gear, reason I think this is cause my wife taped the runs, and watching/listening it to on my computer it sounds like it over revs in first, but may just be me being paranoid. :-)

Anyway though, yeah it's hard to explain a noise over the phone, and even harder to try and explain on-line. I love the way it runs/sounds and you guys did an awesome job building/tuning it. I get compliments on it all the time. Anywho, thanks for the feed back Jim, hopefully we can figure it out when you guys come to Richmond in June.

Did you ever find out what was making this noise. My 01' with 77k miles is doing the exact same and I'm about to change timing chain, guides, tensioners, etc in an effort to solve this.

Please start a new thread with a complete description of what you need help with. Can't help you much when all you say is "noise".

I only wanted a response from the thread starter, WHATVPR on their findings. Thank you for your information, however.

A response on a 15 year old thread from a user who hasn't been online since, well, I don't know...

You're going to be waiting a while, hence the suggestion to start a new thread but you can work it however you might see fit. Good luck.
