G-Tech Performance Meter
I've read some posts in the past regarding g-tech times for 1/4 mile and other info. Since I don't have any knowledge of it I wondered if this is just an expensive toy or can you get any accurate info. from it. I see it in the Summit catalog for $139. Is it worth it?.Thanks for any info.---JIM
BLACK BOLT,
I have one and really like it. I use it as a "gauge" for mods. I have found that they can vary significantly from one to the other. Therefore, somebody that shows a 12.5 in the quarter on one, might only show a 13.5 on another. It seems they're not calibrated so well. But, they do respond to change, (such as mods) even if they're wrong.
They're kinda like bathroom scales - you might weigh 180 lbs on one scale and 183 lbs on another. If you lose 5 lbs, one will show 175 lbs and the other will show 178 lbs. It's still reflecting a difference, and that's what counts.
BTW, I use mine for HP runs, and mine is very consistent (within 2 HP) of what a REAL dyno showed. My first G-TECH (which I sent back) showed some 40 HP less. It must have been dropped or something. Anyway, the point is, don't go posting some ridiculous numbers from it if you can't back it up with a dyno pull or the track. SOME ARE WRONG AT THE BASELINE, even though they still respond to CHANGE.
Mine just so happens to be right on the money with the dyno and the track. Good luck, you'll know if you got a good or bad one if you compare to something that has a printout.
PS - I just used mine 1 hour ago. Bone stock it showed 335 HP. The dyno showed almost 333 HP. I wanted to see what the 90mm MAF and conical filter with the T/B and Magnaflow exhaust alone would do (no chip) - 343 HP. So there you go. Same weather conditions too. Don't try this in other states - I have really good gas here.

gforce,
thanks for the g-tech info. I may get one since I have a 10% off coupon from summit. We have a small strip down here in s.w. va. which i'm going to try soon. btw where is Proctorville, Ohio. I also have another home up in n.e. Ohio and travel all around the state. Thanks again.---JIM

Agree with Jim except for the variance. It is important to calibrate them exactly according to the instructions. If they are not exactly level, or you enter the wrong weight, your readings will be off. I suspect that most of the variance is due to inaccurate calibration. Sure, they won't be as accurate as an electronic timer (that's why I don't post G-tech times), but for the small amount of money they do an amazingly accurate job.
Alpha,
I can't help but feel you're calling me stupid. Are you? Of course I calibrate mine on level ground and use the correct weight!! (I had my truck weighed too) What I'm saying is my first G-TECH wasn't worth the powder to blow it up because it was 40 HP off of the dyno readings. They vary like bathroom scales even if "set" on level ground.

gomenasai, Jim. I thought you were alluding to others that have posted re: the G-tech. Yours is one of the opinions I respect the most on this board. I know that there were some early units that were produced out of spec. I humbly beg your apology, and I would appreciate it if you would give me my airplane back (oops, wrong George).
If anyone is interested, I have one that I purchased with the Lightning group buy a few months ago. I have never gotten around to using it. If interested, email me.

I'm sorry I took your post the wrong way and I appreciate your kind words regarding respecting my opinion. I read your post (above) over and over again and it still sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about. Anyway, forget it. It's not important. I'm in a really bad mood because my "chip" (received today) only produced 2 (G-TECH) HP over the above-posted configuration. "I wanted to see what the 90mm MAF and conical filter with the T/B and Magnaflow exhaust alone would do (no chip) - 343 HP." This is what makes my G-TECH post "on point".

ally69,
No problem. They attach to the windshield like a radar detector. All you do is plug it in, level it up via the swivel, (on level ground) and press the button when "ACCL" flashes to record 0-60 or 1/4 mile times in the first detent or press "ACCL" in the second detent for HP runs. On the HP runs you have to input your correct weight. Again, no problem, just get weighed on a truck scale and remember how much gas you have. Just make sure you don't get shift spikes. Take off in 2nd gear (because there's no shifting spikes that take place) and it will closely match a dyno. This pic was one of my best HP runs ever on JL's street program and ram air - and the SOP felt it. Here's a pic of what they look like.
BTW, my truck with a full tank of gas (without me) weighed 4,660 lbs and the HP runs are rear-wheel HP like a chassis dyno, not crank HP like Ford rates them. Big difference.
