Fritz, My Man...
For what the filter costs (around 15 clams at the Ford dealer, by my recollection), change it frequently. You're dealing with an item here that, by changing it, improves performance and engine life. It's cheap and pathetically easy to replace.
You'll find that a fair amount of small crud gets trapped in the thing, even just tooling around the city.
As for an interval, how does "at each oil change" sound? Easy way to remember it. I keep a stack of them in the garage, right next to the stack of oil filters. Every 1000 miles, the silver beast gets a change of oil and filter, a lube (steering stops and steering idler arm zerk), and a new air filter. I have a reasonably strong runner (see signature) and intend to keep it that way.
Plus I'm a freak as far as taking care of this thing goes. Thought I should mention this, as well (in the essence of "balanced reporting").

Good thing you mentioned you were a freak about maintenance! We wouldn't have been able to tell otherwise.

Good one there. What's really twisted is that I'm not REMOTELY the worst one on this site. Had a guy (fom NH?) post last winter about putting his up on jack stands and waxing the entire undercarriage (my hero and role model).

Just FYI, the owner's manual reccomends changing the air filter @ 30k miles. That's the normal schedule. The Special Operating Conditions page has dusty condition schedule which states you should replace it "as required". 30k miles seems awfully high to me. My .02
