Thumbs down 2001 cobra

Guys just to let you know my 2001 cobra is a lot slower than my 2000 lightning. It is a big disappointment. Oh well it looks good and thats about it. Engine blew on it at 800 miles. Some of the guys on blueovalnews board give me a lot of ****. thinking I am talking crap about the car and since I was the first to have one in michigan. So people are never happy. But everyone on this board is cool. I enjoy sharing things with you guys and reading your remarks.

Engine blew on the Cobra at 800 miles? Any idea what caused it?

Cobra99;
You're braver than I am to even buy one. After the experience with my 99 Cobra, I'm not having anything to do with them until the redesign. I love Mustangs, and plan on owning another one, but it won't be this generation. Did they give you the prerequisite Escort for a loaner?

I have a Cobra on order. I saw your post on BON.Some of those guys don't believe you for some reason. Why would they replace the trans also? I had the engine go in my Lightning at 7-8k and the new engine is much more powerful. I hope I don't have problems with the Cobra, but it's a machine, you never know. I have had many of the things that go wrong with the trucks happen to my truck. So far I just take it in stride and things seem to be working out. We have a 98 GT that has never been back to the dealer yet. I hope this engine works out OK for you.

How about the 2003 Cobra? That's the one I'm looking to get. New body (retro), modular 5 liter, possibly an IRS delete option... Oh boy!

Not like I care... but... Isn't that what GM is doing with the Firebird/Camaro that is supposed to return in 2005 or something? Make it a retro with only a v8?

That's what I've heard.

shouldn't you give the 01 cobra (assuming you own one)a break in period before comparing to a 2000L? wait a bit, those 01 snakes just came off the line.

I don't get over to BON much at all, so this is the first I've heard about your situation.

Man, that stinks. I have read reports of some '01 Cobras busting low-13s bone stock, and that's decent (although I'm not thoroughly impressed). Still, by now I'd think the R&D to get these motors _right_ would be done.

I never had a lick of trouble with my '96 Cobra, and just sold it the other day to a good friend who is very happy with his new low-12 second ride.

Ford may tell us they're going to have a 5.0L modular motor putting out 350hp in the '03 Mustang, but they can't even get the 4v 4.6 running right since '99. Not sure I'd want to roll the dice with a "new, redesigned engine" at this point.

Good luck!

Wes, I could'nt help but notice that you replaced your Cobra with a Saleen S-351. How do you like it so far?

2nd Bolt,

I've had the car for a week. It's very cool. 12.5k miles and it just needed a little waxing and buffing to look new. Interior is a dream. The leather Recaros are awesome, as is the 6-speed trans.

It runs very good, and even better now that I've tuned it up. I had it dyno'd before I even bought it from the dealer. The blower belt was slipping a bit and it had the OEM cap/rotor and spark plugs. I've fixed all that (see 10psi vs. 8psi when I tested it), so it should pull 440+rwhp in bone stock form.

Neat car, could be faster with all the potential in the motor, but I'm going to leave it alone. Drives like a stocker til you nail it. Handles and brakes WA better than my Cobra (which had modified suspension components) or any C5 I've driven (haven't driven a Z06), and that's where the Saleen shines anyway.

Thx for asking! My webpage has a few pics if you're interested.

they don't know what caused it. I do know they took it back to Romeo to inspect. Don't know why they replaced the trans too. Oh well. Its great now. No low end power. I had a 99cobra too and Ford bought it back that is why I kept the cobra99 name . If you know what I mean. It does haul once you get it going. I purchased a 99 Vortech SC kit and came to realize that the engine pulleys and routing changed and had to send it back. SC maybe before the end of summer. maybe? Gonna get a new car I think don't want one with a blown engine and trans that was replaced. Gonna sell it to this guy in a month. I'll keep you guys posted.

I'd be real interested to know if its making the advertized HP. The 'Bullit' does not (if reports are to be believed at BON.

No I'm Not. I have another one on order. I am in the process of selling mine as I type and will receive a new one with no problems. I get up to 4 a-plans a year. So I can only this the guys on this board are more Mature and listen too and take notes not on BON. I have learned a lot from this site and had my cobra before my 00 lightning, I owned a 93 and 94 lightning in the past.
