A local knowlegable mechanic told me that ford went to 5/w/20 in late 2000 production.

it does sound like a few paint cans being shaken at the same time. You do need to be standing right next to the truck to hear it though.

Norcal,

If it's any consolation, I test drove a '00 Mustang GT last summer that sounded exactly the same way with 75 miles on it. In fact it was the very same day I took my truck in to have it listened to. Most engines won't have this noise, but like I said earlier, my van does it and it now has 71k on it and runs like a champ. It also outruns my brother-in-laws identical van that does not make the noise.

Coincidentally, my buddy had an identical Lightning to mine, color and all. His was quiet, but was A FULL .4 SLOWER than mine stock for stock and chip for chip. He sold it because of the power difference and got a '01 GT. It could not keep up with mine PERIOD.

The moral of this story is that if the engine runs decently and doesn't use oil, I'd hang on to it, but go to your dealer and have this noise documented like I did. (See scanned document)

There are so many things that can go wrong with a dealer-installed engine swap (e-mail me and I'll go into detail)......not to mention you may get a dog for a motor that rattles too!! Don't do it unless it's knocking. And by knocking I mean sounding like a hammer hitting repetitiously on an anvil or a suspension part or some other heavy object. Believe me, knocking rod bearings go, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK at the same interval. You can't mistake it. What we have is a screwy rattle like a paint-can agitator. It won't hurt it, but it's embarrassing. Yeah, I know, we shouldn't have to put up with it and I hate it bad. But I don't hate it bad enough to roll the dice and get a "luck of the draw" engine with a bad installation and boogered-up wires which will ultimately wind up causing a mis-fire or a vacuum leak. I could go on and on and on.....just get it documented like I did. I hope this helps you feel better about it.
