Lightning Bed Covers
i guess i got my $150's worth with the factory soft cover, but i am looking for something more secure. i carry some items too tall for a fibreglass lid. anyone have one of those aluminum roll up or electric covers on their lightning yet? happy with it?
MRBBQMAN,
I came close to buying a Pace-Edwards but, since I don't carry tall things, went with an ARE hard tonneau instead. However, I have a friend with an electric P-E rolltop on his Silverfish and he loves it. (Of course, he also thinks that unless it has a bowtie on it a truck's no good, so you may want to take his advice with a grain of salt.)
Will say, though, that when I was researching bed covers, I was impressed with the Pace-Edwards product.

I checked into roll up covers before deciding on another fiberglass hard tonneau. The one I liked best was the ROLL N LOCK, which is much heavier duty than the Pace Edwards.
See http://pickupspecialties.com/rollnlock.html
for pictures.
However, I talked to the owner of the Roll N Lock Company, and he told me they would have to drill 22(I think) holes to mount the cover on my Lightning(The bed is not square, and the use a filler on each side), plus two drain holes are required at the front of the bed. The aluminum slat joints need to be treated with a silicone lubricant a couple times a year to help retain the plastic seals. And then there is the possibility that the cover could freeze closed and be extremely hard to open under icy winter conditions if you live in an area prone to that like I do. The Roll N Lock was about $1000 if I remember right. Good luck with whatever you buy.

Thanks Mike & Bob for the info, it seems that pace-edwards doesn't make for lightnings tapered bed either, roll & lock sounds like alot of work & drilling for $1000.00, i might have to go with one of those butterfly design or sectional type hard fibreglass covers. anybody know if you can drive with one of the covers flipped over to carry tall stuff?

I also had checked into the VERSACAP
See below for Pictures http://www.snowbear.com/versacap/features.htm
which would have done what you wanted and more. I probably would have bought one of these if they had made one for the Flare Side
Let me know if you find someone making something similiar for our trucks.

Hey I had a few questions about some of those companies making aftermarket Covers or the Roll And Lock unit. I live in Enfield CT, and im looking to install a flat unit that does not hang over the edges but is also waterproof so I can install a bed rug too? Where would i go to have this work done? I am still looking for companies but im not really all that knowledgeable yet
Any Help is appreciated.

pace edwards website says theirs work with the bedrug which they also sell, that would be the way to go, but from what i understand, the tapered bedrails on the flairsides is the problem, maybe if they get a lot of inquiries, they might look into it.

I wanted a "better than factory" bed cover, too. I looked at both Pace-Edwards and the Roll-n-Lock for security and ease of hauling the occasional "tall" (but clean) item. I've had my Roll-n-Lock for over a month now. I installed it myself - took about 12 screws into the bedrail and 4 into the tailgate. The kit is very complete, designed for the flareside box, and top quality. I used the two plastic plugs in the front of the bed for the housing drain tubes (no rust and can be swapped out easy). The cover is great; locks at full closed, three quarter, half, and one quarter. Took about 6 hours including the BedRug for the install. No compatibility issues. Cost was $925 incl. shipping.

bill, did the bedrug come with it for 925.00 or just the roll-n-lock. most of the motorized aluminum slat units are in the 1000.00 range, or is the unit by itself worth the 925.00. i wish i could find a good clamp on unit without having to drill holes in the bed and tailgate, and one designed for the flairside's odd shaped bed.
Just got my SnugLid installed, but had to remove the Duraliner because the ridges on the front bed cover panel wouldn't allow the mounting bracket to line up properly. I got a look at the Bed Rug in another guy's truck and fell in love. So, I'm selling the Duraliner and with a little luck will have the Bed Rug installed tomorrow. Anyone interested in a Ford Duraliner?

Yup, the BedRug's pretty cool. Get lots of compliments on mine (as well as my A.R.E. lid). Plus, it gives you a decent place to sleep when the inevitable late night spousal "discussion" ends with, "I want you out of this house!"
