Question Superchips and Johnny Lightnings

I am starting to get interested in a chip and have a couple questions. Excuse me if my questions are basic and unknowledged, that's what questions are for.
I am looking at the Performance Products Superchip and the Johnny Lightning DIABLOSPORT chips as possible purchases. The SuperChip claims a 28 hp gain on the 5.4 engine, but how much will I get on an L? How much HP will I gain from the Johnny Lightning chip?

So, basically, why should I spend more money on a Superchip? (325 i believe) Why not get a Johnny Lightning?

Do they help gas mileage?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Scratch that question. I just called Performance Products and talked to Mike (?) for a good 20 minutes and I am sold on a SuperChip. Sorry JL.

Zeus:

I've run 3 different chips in my '00 L. Without question, I've had more success with Johnny's product. My first chip ran too lean and had "pinging" concerns. Had it reburned ... runs fine, now. (It's in the toolbox as a backup) The second chip wasn't reliable at all. Sent it back to be checked and reburned with the same result. The chip distributor had an attitude like it was my fault his product is "crap" and who was I to question his supposed knowledge?? Finally got reimbursed for poor product.

I'm happy with my latest purchase and can't wait for summer to come! Peace!!

Go with Johnny's chip, it's proven. Customer service is where it's at and Johnny will take care of you.

First, ask the chip maker if scratching off the film on your computers edge connector will void your warranty ...

Zeus,

My .02:

I have personally known Mike Troyer for many years. In a previous life he helped me with my 300zx chip. Anyway, I got my L chip from him. At the time it was the R7. I upgraded to the R9 and that was getting better. My best ET with the R9 was 13.42 @ 100.98. That was on F1's with 93 octane.

Mikes knowledge and support is excellent. And he is a helluva good guy...

Since last fall (The R9), I have had JL reburn it with the newest JL/JDM chip in January. My first trip to the track this year was 13.28 @ 102.31. Same F1's, same 93 octane.

Obviously JL doesn't do the Superchip anymore. But JL is also one helluva guy. He has taken a lot of time to answer my questions and provide some guidance with his products. Obviously JL sells more for the L's than the chips too.

I understand that there is a newer R9 version of the superchip out that may provide better ET's. I spoke with Jay(Superchips) at the JDM event and he mentioned this.

It really comes down to personal choice. I think the generic Superchip is night and day better than stock and Mike is the guy to get it from. I also think that the other tuners may give you a better ET if that is what you are looking for.

As far as warranty, as Mike will tell you, there is the Magnason/Moss warranty act. Basically the dealership must PROVE that the aftermarket part caused the failure. My local dealers will do anything to get out of warranty work. I don't think any chip maker will gaurantee that you won't have warranty problems. Its really out of their hands.

I don't have a Diablo chip and don't know if/when I will get it. I will probably go through this season with the JL superchip and see what the results are.

Just my .02,

Superchip? Diablochip? The programming was done by the same guy! I laugh when people argue that one will be better than the other!!

Ladebfrigginda, most people here are talking about JL's Diablochip, not the standard one.
