Son Of A...!
Gang:
Haven't posted in a while as I've been out of the country for the last couple months (France to Argentina to Uruguay to New Zealand). The 'Bolt had a pretty tough spring.
Before I left, I figured I should warm up the coolant, oil, and exhaust to purge out all of the winter's accumulated nastiness (water and acids in the oil, water in the exhaust, and what-not). Rolled it out of the garage and set it idling in the driveway. Anyway, it was a pretty nice day (40's, sunny, salt-free road), so I figured it wouldn't hurt to rip one down the street and back. After all, I hadn't driven it since leaving on a previous trip to New Zealand in November.
Anyway, I dropped the hammer out in front of the house and threw down an enormous burnout. Ran up the street (less than a mile), turned around, and brought it straight home. Before I parked it back in the garage, I figured I should check the wheel wells for molten rubber spray (a constant worry with these things). No rubber, but I did see a big iron nail sticking out of the center of the rear driver's-side tire tread. That was a real kick in the beans, to say the least. A total of 2019 miles on that tire.
Anyway, I had about 6 hours before I had to leave. The local Goodyear store offered to fix it right away with an F1 that they happened to have in stock, for only $460. Four hundy and sixty my azz! I jacked the thing up, threw a stand under it, and left the crippled beast where it sat.
I had a new F1 waiting for me when I got back - $214 delivered from TireRack. A somewhat "challenged" individual at a local tire store chain mounted it up (for free, get that!) using, among other things, a big-azzed rusty crowbar, but in the end it was all good and he somehow didn't so much as FINGERPRINT the rim. I'll never figure that one out. Dropped him a 20 and all is right in my world again.
So far this year the 'Bolt is costing me around $200 per mile to operate, and my wife has the most expensive flower planter in the neighborhood.
Glad to be back home. Looking back through the posts it's obvious that I've missed a lot. The 2001's seem to be pretty quick.

$214 form tirerack? Gonna head over there, traction is decent enough to warrant a new pair.
WBelcome back, you have a lot of reading to do.

Why didn't you just get the tire patched? As long as it's not on the sidewall you have a perfectly good tire afterwards?

I was wondering the same thing? If nothing else, you have a same size spare. Just how big was this railroad spike anyway?
