a new game in town, head units that is
I looked at this head unit yesterday and it blew me away. For $3000 you get the head unit $2300, a DSP $450, and a external MD player for about $250. Last year you could get a Alpine unit like this for about $10,000(subjective on my part) with all the external plug-ins.
I think I'll burn some of my bonus please.
Kenwood Shows World's First In-Dash DVD/CD Receiver With Motorized LCD Video Touch Panel
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Setting the industry standard for mobile entertainment, Kenwood USA Corp. today introduced the world's first Dual-Zone, in-dash DVD/CD player/receiver that includes a retractable wide screen high-resolution LCD video display with touch panel control. No larger than an ordinary in-dash AM/FM CD receiver, the new Kenwood Excelon(TM) KVT-910DVD, shown here today for the first time at the International Consumer Electronics Show, incorporates a motorized high resolution LCD screen which serves as both a video display and TV screen. The display also offers Kenwood's exclusive new touch screen graphical user interface (GUI), simplifying operation of the system with on-screen controls and menus.
``Kenwood provides end users with everything needed for in-car entertainment, from head units to a multi-channel processor; to speakers -- including our new detachable center channel -- and amps. We have the ultimate in mobile entertainment equipment,'' said Steve Berry, Kenwood's national product manager for mobile electronics. ``The high-resolution screen offers superior video performance, and the touch-screen menus are much more user friendly than typical buttons or a remote control.''
Kenwood's new DVD receivers play CD, CD-R, CD-RW and Video CD discs, and offer many of Kenwood's advanced mobile audio features, including System E's + advanced crossover system, System Q EX sound control, PowerSlide/B.M.S. amplifier control and the ability to create two independent listening zones in the same vehicle. The Dual Zone feature allows, for example, for front seat and back seat occupants to enjoy different programs simultaneously over the same audio system.
Kenwood Mobile Entertainment components will be available through authorized Kenwood dealers for the following MSRP:

Guys, read between the lines this unit does everything, including built-in TV tuner.
Remember most audio is going the way of AC-3 sooner than later. That means 5 channel music.
I think a better way of looking at this is a computer that plays, 2/4/5 channel music, plays TV, VCD, CD CDR, CDRW, ect... If you can slap a mobile telephone via PCMCIA then you can check stocks, yahoo, F150online.com, video transmission ect.. Hell stick a mouse on it and play DOOM when stuck in traffic or tap the touch screen to A HREF access web pages.
There's nothing else currently on the market like this. I think you can even subscribe to some sort of sat stuff, maybe for GPRS.
I'm under the impression that it does everything the Alpine does(with all plug-ins), for $2300.
Also there's a 2" x 5" x 8" smart external component that will have to go in the center console.

5.1 for a vehicle? Why bother, where in the heck are you going to put a decent center channel speaker? If you know what I mean then you realize the importance of the center channel for vocals and dialogue...it's the most important speaker in a 5.1 system.

I know it's not exactly the same, but for the same money or less you can get a laptop that will do all of the above and more. I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 and love it. Can play MP3's through the stock tape player, watch DVD's, play games and then take it into the house at night. I love those units and wish I could afford one, but since the money was a little tight I got the laptop instead since it can be used in more ways. As for the 5.1 channel sound, some of the Panasonic HU have a fold out center channel speaker.

z96Cobra has got the idea.
This is a moble laptop that fits in a 1 din compartment. The only thing that this unit might have over the laptop is the shock/jitter properties, bumps, cornering, bla, bla..
As far as the center channel you can do a billion things with the DSP and the field effects. You differently aren't limited by this little issue, if you want the center channel connect it above the mirror or under the AC controls.
I also like the idea that if it has a RS232 connection then you can check the CUX/GTEC as your driving down the road, just another input.
If you wanted to be completely evil the you could connect a radar detector in the front/rear of your truck and whenever it hits a certain treshhold then you could fire off a 3 watt RF feedhorn and fry the cops radar gun. I don't susgest getting caught doing this little trick.
