Thumbs down Alignment! Have you run into this????

The front tires are starting to wear on the inside. Took it to a dealership for an alignment to discover that the L can only be aligned slightly and if the alignment is off a little more than slightly, the front end needs a “camber kit” at a cost of $250-$300 installed and aligned.

Have any of you discovered the same???

Jim,

Deep Breath!!!

Napa makes a cam bolt kit for a lot less than Ford. I have pics in my Zing site and can get you a part number. i think I posted it previously. About $20 for BOTH sides as opposed to Nutso cost Furd is charging.

I'm taking mine to a local shop as I don't wish Cooter & Gomer taking my L on a "road test." No F--n way.

When I had my front end done they put the cam bolts in no charge. It really is the mechanics call. But if you want that alingment on the money they have to put them in. Bob

Jim,
Any alignment shop should have the parts... I work for Just Tires and we stock them because all F150's and Exploder's come from factory out of specs... I believe the cost of the parts are around 20-25 each side and labor is around 30 each side... Add that up and the cost is 100-110 plus alignment which is 60-70... Half the cost and less drop off time than the dealer... I believe that only the left side is out on most but some require both...

Later , Justin

Bob

Thanks

It looks like the part number is 264-2553, correct?

I'll pick up a set and take it to a alignment expert other than a dealership.

Jim, is your truck lowered? These can be put on in about 25 minutes for each side. You replace one at a time. I had no choice as my truck is lowered.

Jim,
A-Lightning had the same problem with his truck if I remember correctly. Now, if I can remember everything he told me, he went to two different dealerships before they would finally try and fix the problem under warranty and pay for most of the cost on his worn tires. Seems like though, he said something about it still doing it. If you want shoot me an email and I can get you in contact with him for further information.

My dealership was going to install the cam bolts and align under warranty due to left front control arm moving back and forth. I ended up putting in Herb's washers myself and taking the truck to my alignment shop. Cost me about $120.00 but I was able to discuss alignment specs with the mechanic. Ford should not be trying to charge you to properly align a front end which pretty much came from the factory out of alignment. My left front tire was getting serious outside wear at only 2500 hundred miles. No more.

jimbo, I believe the only way to get a precise alignment is via the install of a cam bolt kit. Originally f150s came with cam bolts installed, but at some point the bean counters at Ford decided that close enough was good enough, and they phased out the cam bolts. Some of the early gen. 2 L's had complete kits installed, some had only two bolts, and most had none. Specialty products http://www.specprod.com/ makes a kit for the Lightning. It isn't listed on their web site, but they will give you the p/n if you call their toll free #. They do not sell direct but they will give you the name of a dealer in your area. My kit cost about $48, as I recall. Of course, I would think that if you hassled your dealer, ha ha ha, he would install one under warantee.

Oh, and you might want to check out this thread: https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000827.html

Maybe it should be included in the FAQ?

I know I've mentioned this before but, I used to manage a alignment and brake shop. I love Ford and will till death, but they are notorious for shipping cars and trucks out completly out of whack. A Ford tech once told me that they install the alignment shims and such before they install the drivetrain, than they never check it again afterwards. Every Ford pick-up that came in our door needed a $200 shim job. Just part of being a proud owner a Ford I guess. In my opinion a small price to pay

Jim, forgot to mention that the cam bolts won't do you any good if the lower A-arms are still sliding around, and the star washer "fix" doesn't do it, as I have discovered on my truck. You need a set of Herb's inserts.

I ordered mine yesterday. Going to have them installed as soon as I put my new front tires on.

I went to ford and got my truck aligned and the invoice says I got a cam alignment kit, but then it says I only had the right side installed. The kit cost around $50.

Angry

I think Charlie Brown said it best when he said..."ARRGGH!" I am in the midst of a nice battle w/ the dealer I bought my Bolt from about the alignment. I had it there twice w/i the first yr of owning my L for alignment concerns, clunk steering wheel turned to the right to keep it straight, and both times I was told to take a hike ,it was "dead on specs". They never heard of the washer "fix"(which doesn't work),they never heard of the "clunk". Etc etc, well I had it back in last week and low and behold its OUT OF ALIGNMENT!!! No sh$t,thanks for the news flash,I would have never guessed being I have CORDS showing! Damn thing has been out of aligment since day 1,and the won't cover it because I'm passed the magical 12k window. BUT if I can show some proof that there is a "fix",and a true problem that Ford is aware of they will cover the alignment AND the tires! I've been working on collecting SSB's and TSB's and any other credible info I can crame down this dealers throat(or in some other orifice),so if you have any other info that is "verified" PLEASE post it. I want to win this round w/ my dealer...Great..cam bolts...washers...tires...anything else I'm missing to get this damn truck going in the right direction? LOL
