Transmission Fluid
Hey Guys,
I have not posted here for a while, I have been stisfied with just reading the posts. However I have a question for all of you. My truck just reached 28K so I decided to change out the transmission fluid. So I went to ford and purchased a filter and some fluid. They told me that my truck used Mercon V fluid so I bought 6 quarts and changed it out. I immediately felt a difference when driving the truck. On driven it about 20 miles. So I decided to check the manual and realised that, the Mercon r and Mercon r V are note interchangeable. Our truck uses Mercon r not r V. Do you suggest that I drain the transmission and replace fluid or have it completely flushed.
Let me know

Do I have to flush the torque converter as well or just change the fluid in the transmission?
I am not too happy with tis reccomendation from ford, it seems that it will cost me quite a few bucks

Back in 2003 I unfortunately believed what I read on the AAMCO Transmission Fluid Bottle and ended up putting the wrong stuff in too

To make a long story short, even know Greg Evans AND EVERYBODY ELSE FOR THAT MATTER said take it out, I left it in and drove the **** out of that Lightning for 3 motors and numerous years afterwards with no trouble at all.
AMOF my transmission had shift points as high as 57K - 6K and when I sold it on 6/6/6, that tranny worked as perfect as the day I bought it....
I'm not saying leave it in, I'm just letting you know in my case it didnt hurt anything.

Leave it in it will be fine.
Ford has recommended Mercon V for all vehicles for the past seven or eight years, but most Fords on the road including our lightnings continued to be serviced by the discontinued Mercon/Dexron lll now called ATF.....but now all Fords run Mercon V,
Mercon V, is a far better product that more closely resembles the factory-fill ATF which Ford has used for over eight years says Ford.
