Do a search....a number of people have removed the molding in order to paint it body color.

HI!... TRITON46 : The rear window has to be pulled out on my truck in order to get the plastic molding out. My dealer had a hell of a time after they installed a new rear window in my truck and forgot to install the weather stripping behind the molding. They ended up taking the whole window out again.

Is this something the shadetree mechanic can do with ordinary tools?

You have to pull the headliner out in order to get the trim rig out.
