Question Autolamp delay?

Could someone describe for me the autolamp delay in a 1999 truck? Does it leave the lights off until the truck starts?

I'm running HID lights now in my 2000 and I can't use them with the autolamps currently, but a delay (IE, lamps don't turn on until after the car is started) would be fantastic!

The 2000's power for the autolamps is erratic until the truck starts, and the ballasts for my lamps don't like that.

Oh Bah. That's not what I need. Hehehe, I need a delay before they turn on.

Hrm, time to do some relay research.

They don't turn on until it gets dark out and the delay is for the amount of time they stay on after the engine is turned off.

I need to wire in a relay or something I guess to create a delay so that if it is dark out when I start the car, the lamps won't come on until AFTER the engine is started.

The stuterring unclean juice that the truck puts out while the engine is cranking dosn't work with my ballasts...they won't turn on, then I gotta turn them on manually anyway.

It allows you to adjust how long the lights stay on after you turn off and exit the car.

Thepawn, yes the lights come on as soon as you key the ignition.....You could always wire the ballasts individually using a Bosch 30 amp relay wired directly to the battery. Then you could use the output from the headlight circuit to trigger the relay. The relays are not going to react the same way to voltage drops as ballasts will.

I am considering doing this mod on my '01 L headlight housings, what are your impressions on HID so far? What did the kit cost and did it require modifying the housing itself?

Thanks.

Thumbs up

This is just as simple as wireing a relay, that is normally closed, to the main power of the headlamp switch. This relay could be wired to activate when the ingition is in the start position only, which would turn the lights off. These parts of the lighting circuits have very little current draw because of existing relays after them. The light switch is just a control circuit. If i could find my wireing diagram i could probably draw you up something. I have been wanting to do this anyways to my truck. Something anyways about having your lights on while trying to start you vehicle has al ways been a no no for generations.

I would appreciate any help on this guys, since I don't know that much about it.

I don't know where the headlight realys are located yet, but I'm pretty sure they'll be in that box in the engine compartment.

LightningKid -- I really like my HID conversions, they look really sweet and are a heck of alot brighter. I have a Focuz HID kit, won it off of ebay for $480. I went a step further though, I changed from the single light 9007 fixtures to CrystalEyes dual 9005/9006 setup. That way I wouldn't lose a high-beam. So I have a 9006 HID conversion and a regular superwhite 9005 high-beam. The housings did not need to be modified, and there was just enough room inside the engine frame by the headlamp opening to mount the ballasts. The bulbs just screwed in like a standard bulb.

Dan, do you know if there is a web site for your HID setup?

Thanks.
