Just met a piece of Mr. Semi Tire. (long)
I got a canadian goose, big baby, trapped in the medium with a concrete barrier and four lanes to cross. 80mph in the Mark VIII as i came around the bend in the fast lane rush hour traffic it wandered out. i hardly got to the brake and i cringed and prepared for impact. I felt a thump and looked in the rear view, looked like a dozen feather pillows burst at once. I looked over and the guy was white and i dont mean caucasian straring straight ahead, lol. Knocked a piece a plastic loose, nothing like the deer i ran over in the 280zx, but thats another story. Fuzziest underbelly ya ever saw, and smelled like a BBQ for weeks. I'd highly recommend it to you wildlife lovers

Man, these stories!
Some of you are gonna be mad at me for this post but here goes...
I was just starting my trip from Florida back to here. I saw in the far distance, a paper bag flying around. I knew it the second I saw it, we would meet eachother. It was flying around on the other side of the freeway, and then a gust of wind blew it to my side. The cars infront of me blew it up again, and before I knew it, it hit my antenna and bent it back a little. I was going about 65-70, and waited a few miles for it to flyoff. Nope, I looked like an idiot with a Burger Kind flag on my antenna. I slow down a little and I see kids laughing at me in their minivan. I had to stop on the side of the road, get out and undo the darn thing!
I think I lost more of my ego than some damage you guys suffered. I just got on the highway too. What a way to start the trip.

These chunks of delaminated tires or retreads or whatever they are are more prevalent than road kill racoons and skunks on Minnesota highways. I've never actually seen one let go, but have always lived in fear. I'm sure there are stories of deaths that have occurred.
My question is this: Do these tires let go all of a sudden or would a cursory visual inspection disclose one that was marginal and about to blow? I thought truck drivers were supposed to be so safety conscious. Don't they ever look at their tires after gassing up, etc.? Just curious.

Jaymz, I have seen truck tires blow up right in front of me twice on highway. And they are dangerous.
First one I saw was on a dump truck. Tire exploded and took out the big mud flap and its hanger. Sprayed several cars head-on with rubber and metal debris. This was a couple hundred yards in front of me.
Second one was a semi, new car carrier loaded with new cars. Going around sharp turns I notice it swaying five or more degrees from center and side-to-side. It was in front of me. I thought, oh-oh, this looks weird.
I started waving to other drivers to slow down and most of them did except one or two that drove straight into the exploding tire debris. The semi's left rear duals exploded sending rubber shrapnel all over the road. Mostly missed the cars. Then the semi driver swerved hard to the right to get on the shoulder.
By the way, my Lightning got hit by a shopping cart last night. Does that count for a war story? Left a quarter size dent.

Since we're on the subject. When I was about ten I ran over a dead jack rabbit with my bike. He was alll bloated and squishy from laying in the sun all day. Guts and stinky caka sqished out onto the back tire and got all over my friend Acey who was riding on the back.
Acey walked home.

Jaymz,
Truck drivers are required by law to do a pre-trip inspection before they drive, this includes inspecting the tires.
Most drivers inspect the tires whenever they stop for delivery, or take a break...etc.
