Question Question for you auto techs out there

I went to the track Sunday with the Talon group and set a new PB of 13.028 on street tires. I was very happy.

After, we stopped on the way out of town got some gas and got on the highway for the 150 mile trip home. As soon as I got onthe highway I noticed the truck pinging and when at 70 ish just barely holding 1/8 inch of throttle to maintain speed it would "miss" or slightly "buck " every so often. So I pulled over disconnected the battery and pulled the chip. Back on the road the ping is gone but the occaisional miss is still there. It almost feels like you are going over a slight bump in the road the way the truck just barely hesitates when it "misses", weird thing is If I get on the throttle more than 1/8" it is smooth, fast and plenty of power. It is only perceptible on a smooth road at cruise speed with hardly any pedal. The sound it makes when it "misses" is sorta like the gurgle you hear when you let up on the gas at speed....

ANY ideas ??
Thanks in advance
Doug

Not a tech, but you may want to check your plugs.

Doug,

This sounds like the dreaded antifreeze leaking onto the the #4 coil pack issue. Check the heater core lines going to the firewall and coil pack on the rearmost plug on passenger side. If it has been leaking, the coil pack will hae to be replaced.

Hope this helps some!

Good Ideas guys....
I went back and searched and found a number of problems like mine... Makes me feel a little better to see that others have survived similar problems...<grin> I had planned on changing the plugs this weekend..... Sixpipes looks like we are on for Saturday

Anyone know if the coil packs are interchangeable between 99 and 2000 ??? Or will putting one of Go_rilas coli packs on my truck cause it to start craving bananas and start running 12.7's ??

Anybody else with a theory ??

Doug

A easy start would be to burn that gas out of there and refill it at home and see what happens.

GForce
Thanks for the reply
First thing I did in Dallas was fill back up with known better gas,( 1/2 Tank) no change, then I added fuel treatment designed to remove water and clean system in case there was water in the gas no change.

This morning I drove it to work in a slight rain and with the mist coming up off the other cars tires it seemed to be worse so the coil pack is looking more like the suspect...

Doug,

Maybe a plug took a crap on you. It seems others have gone to the track only to find it runs badly on the way home and it was a plug.

My tranny is crapping out on me as of today. I hit passing gear hard at 60mph and held it. It slammed 3rd and now feels like sh*t for some reason. Always look at the last thing you did......it works for ANY mechanical object when you're trying to find the problem. Mine is obvious.

Question

Silver,
I hope you do not find a plug loose, but it may be very possible....Please check the plugs soon!

Doug, sorry you're still having to screw with it, but I'm glad you were able to get it fixed without having to replace anything significant. Have to wonder if that missing electrode kept you out of the 12's though.

There has been more than one post about the Splits taking a dump. NGK or Autolite for me.

Dealer replaced #3 and #5 coil packs but the miss is still there. They wanted to keep the truck for another day to change the 2 plugs under those coil packs ( they didnt have the parts ) but I took it home since I was going to change all 8 this Sat. Well the coil packs didnt help the miss at ALL

I pulled 3 plugs this morning before work. One of the plugs under the changed coils has a small gap issue. The gap is supposed to be .041 or so it was more like 0.400 since the electrode of the splitfire BROKE OFF....

Wondering what happened to the chunk of plug as it exited the engine....

I put the Ford plugs that I pulled out 2000 miles ago back in and the miss is gone....

Pictures later

Silver_bolt looks like you were right.
