That's a real bitch. Sorry. You got bit by a bad motor; happens on any brand. I had to have my 96 LT1 Z28 motor replace for piston slap after 12000 miles. Your truck motor turned out to be a POS; but, what happened to you is rare. Good luck. Lightnings rock!
I have piston slap when it's really cold outside, like below 20 degree's or so. It doesn't bother me too much and if it gets worse before my extended warranty is out, I'll get a new motor. My 96Z28 motor blew at 20,000 miles, might have been the 9lbs. of boost.

Sorry to hear about your trouble SLP.
I wonder if the truck was abused in that 1300mi.
My motor makes some noise for 15-30 seconds when its really cold out, but it goes away. I've heard it being anything from piston slap to a fan clutch. My personal mechanic says its the fan clutch doing its job.
Email me (thepawn@atlantis.edu), maybe we can hook up and you can show me the noise. Does it happen every time? Only when its cold? Does the noise stay or go away after being on for a minute?
I bought my truck new from WayneFord.

Call me crazy guy, but I don't see your problem. You have at least a 90-day warranty from the place you bought it. In addition, I'm sure you have some of the remaining factory warranty still in effect. I'm not sure what the Ford waranty is, but it must be something like 3yr/36000mile. The place you bought it should do the work for you, or they should have it shipped to a shop that does specialty work. I'd call my lawyer if they refuse to do the work.

You seem to be the kind of person that throws the baby out with the bath water; also sounds like you can't work through a problem too well, either. Things like this happen in life. You'ld better get used to it.

you may not believe this, but this is what i did. in 35 years of driving, i had alot of performance cars. for 2000, i went from my 98Z28, to the 2000 L. had the same problem you had, but alot more. couldn't get anything fixed, piston slap got worse every day, etc.
finally, went to a dealer that sold Ford and Chevy. went on a saturday after service dept was closed. traded 2000L for 2001 SS. got 29k for L, since i only had 3300 miles (VIN 2FTZF0736YCA55840, #255 of 4966 - DON'T BUY THIS TRUCK !!).
the salesman never noticed all the problems that we L owners hear because we are into our trucks. so, off i went in the new SS.
well - and this is the unbelievable part - i got homesick for the L, went to ANOTHER Ford/Chevy dealer, and traded the SS for a 2001L ! SS only had 1400 miles on it, so i only lost a little bit on the trade. Now, i'm happy - the 2001 does not seem to have all the problems as before. maybe my low build number on the 2000L (#255) was part of the problem.
at any rate, this may work for you if you want out, but you may take a loss on the L. hopefully, you can pressure them to fix your problems, or buy the truck back. i know how you feel, but these trucks are so addicting, you may want to give it a chance to be fixed ! if you do go to a dealer that sells both brands, you won't take as much of a beating on the L as opposed to going back to a straight chevy dealer - they don't seem to want to touch other brands.
good luck

Hey I know I'm not a L owner but what can you expect from a guy that thinks Durango's rock. I mean give me a break. Dodge's answear to a SUV is 15 inch rims with drum brakes. Anyhow lets hope he does get rid of the L. Maybe he can get one of the last Camaros. Having bought and sold 6 vehicles in the last 4 years I can say that they all have problems. And yes I have owned a couple of GM's.

The diesel sound is probably piston slap. I have it too. But when it warms up it is quiet.I was at my Ford dealer about a week ago. He had a 99 L there with 75,000 miles on it. It also had the diesel sound When cold when it warmed up it was quite.By the way the mechanic said this guy is in sales and he puts a lot of miles on it.Then then he looked at me and said hard miles with a smile.I suppose if you went over to the chevy boards. They probably pick there trucks apart like we do. Bob.
MHMCGILL - one word describes you: PUKE. I didn't come on this board mocking your "truck" did I? Hey, I can outhaul your 'L', and carry more passengers than you, as well as get through snow, ice and mud a HELL of a lot better than you. And, very soon, DORK, I'll be behind the wheel of a new toy in the family - a 2002 Trans AM WS6 - I just had to get one to shut all you 'L' owners down at every opportunity I get on the street or track.
