Which gas in Northwest, esp. Portland?
Howdy to all the Northwest folks-
Seems my current tank of gas isn't sitting right with the Lightning... ol' Red is starting to ping on me now that the weather is getting warmer. I suffered this problem before, and had to switch chips because of it.
My current batch is Chevron from the Berry Hill shopping center in Oregon City. I was fine until the warmer weather last week, and then I would get pinging when running the full Superchips R9 program. Switching to the mild R9 tuning eliminated the ping for the time being.
Anyway, what are your opinions on the best brand of premium fuel to feed to my Lightning here in the Northwest? Chevron? Texaco? Anything else? I've already been advised against using BP or Exxon...
Would love to hear from you!

How do guys hear the pinging ? Between the blower screaming and the passenger screaming, I never hear it.

Spoon,
I have had great luck with Unocal76. Had problems in the past with Chevron (Non-Lightning) never been back. Never had a problem with Texaco either. Shoot for all I know they all get it from the same source. Stick to the bigger higher volume stations. Fuel will be fresher. Big stations will usually get fresh fuel either daily or every other day. Small stations it could be in the ground a while.

I had nothing but problems with chevron in past vehicles. I have used Texaco exclusively for the past 3 years with no problems.

Texaco seems to be working well so far, got about 100 miles into this newly filled tank. So we'll see how it goes.
curmudgen: I'll have to remember the anti-ping button; so far I've just used the detuning switch.
Thanks again guys!

Thanks Silver! I've been contemplating Texaco, so that's what we'll try next.
Lightfootning: I could only hear pinging under certain circumstances, and WOT (or close to it) was not one of them. The ping I was getting was 4th gear, low RPM (between 1k-2k), mild throttle input, and almost always headed uphill.
I have a bottle of NOS Octane boost, but have been advised not to use it... oh well, maybe the in-laws can use it.
Thanks guys!

Push the anti-ping button located on the end of the gearshift. Orange light will come on.

spoondawg,
4th gear uphill ? sounds like your talking about the "Trails End Highway" (213) That is always a nice uphill drive in a turbo or S/C vehicle. That road is bad luck for me. Last ticket and last accident (not at same time) I had was on that stretch of road.
I always use Texaco, most of those are busy and high volume. (no stale gas)

Lightfootning: Yeah, that's the right highway, I'm currenly living at the top of the hill, literally across the street from the ClackamasCommunity College up there, so I get to run that route just about every day.
It is a great drive, provided you're one of the cars at least close to the pole position at the lights at the bottom of the hill. Otherwise you're just one of the sheep trying to get some breathing room, fighting for space with all the log trucks, school buses, and soccer moms.
Only a couple vehicles have challenged the Lightning up that hill -- a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a Honda Accord. Both did flyby's as I was cruising (65-70 MPH) up the hill. I was able to reel in the Cherokee easily with a judicious 3-second romp at WOT; but was unwilling to break triple digits to waste the Accord. My 'spidey' sense was working that day, as just around the corner was Mr. Oregon State Patrolman... and all of a sudden the Accord was lunch, but not for my beastie. Oh, well... another day.
FYI, the local, county, and state police offices are up on top of the hill; and more often than not there are patrol bikes shooting lasers both up and downhill.
See ya's on the streets!
