Question Exhaust moan, from 87-95 MPH

I have a question, on my 2001 L I am having a problem, and was wondering if anyone else has, or had a similar problem, and did you solve it.

When I am on the highway as I approach 90mph I get a moaning or groaning noise. Once I pass 95mph the noise dissapeers, it feels like it is coming from the exhaust.

I had the truck at the dealer this week, they neutralized the exhaust and ordered the counter weights that What 04 posted about. The neutralizing reduced the vibrations I was having, but did nothing for the noise.

Has anyone had a similar problem, and what did you do to solve it.

Thanks
Don

Don C,

I think this is normal, and I don't think you'll find too many who will even understand what your talking about.

Sounds to me like you have the same sensitive assometer as I do. This noise you are talking about feels like the engine is going flat or stopping it's strong pull. Then once it disappears, feels like it's pulling hard again? Am I on the correct path?'

From what I understand, a change to an aftermarket exhaust should help this condition. My '00 had this same deal, and my '01 is somewhat better. It is muffler related.

Thanks What04
Sounds like you might be on the right path.

The noise is hard to explain it allmost sounds like load gears, or a bad tire out of ballance. I know it is not the tires I had them rotated and reballanced, still sounds the same.

It feels like during the 2-300 rpm's that it makes this noise the exaust pulses are bouncing all around the inside of the muffler. The noise is worse on the right side if you open the rear window, or crack the passanger window.

I guess I will either put a X pipe infront of the muffler, or put a MagnaFlow 14568., but I am going to give the dealer one more try, also I want the counter weights.

Don C. The noise I hear in there exhaust system sounds weird to.Well here goes. When I am doing lets say 80 mph and let off the gas pedal the sound I hear is like a blum blum blum blum sound. Almost like a jake brake on a semi trailer. Also when I let up off the gas it seems like the truck has a lot of rolling resistance maybe because of the wide tires. But when you let off the gas it seems to slow down rather quickley.Does any of this make any sense? Bob

SVT Bob:

Yes it does. Hard to describe, but normal I'm thinking.

Bob it make sense to me, mine does the same thing just at a higher speed. I think the reason the truck slows down quicker than what you are used to is the low gear ratio, and maybee when the super charger is not under boost it may add some engine braking that a normally asperated engine would not have.

The jake brake analogy is a good way to explain what my truck does when I decelerate. Well it is good to know I am not alone.

I will let you know what finally fixes this problem, belive me I will get to the bottom of it. It may take a while but I won't give up.

I notice a Bllaaaaaatttt when i come up on the freeway in the morning, there is a wall for the sound to bounce back so I can hear it good. It does it at about 65 to 75, and then I shift and let off as i go under the other side of the freeway turnoff.

That blum-blum-blum sound on decel is the same sound we used to get with glasspacks like when you sit and rev the motor . you get that sound as the motor slows down. It sounds good in a tunnel... grin.
