Question Fuel filter replacement on Gen 2

Guys,

I just realized the other day that I haven't changed my fuel filter yet. With 14+k miles on it, I believe its time!

I've done many of these on late model Mustangs and my old Gen 1 truck, but haven't even looked to see where it is on the new L.

Anyone who's done this, can you tell me where it is (I'll find it, I'm sure) and if there are any "gotchas" in replacing it? I have the good o-ring tools to disconnect the lines, and I know to relieve pressure from the fuel line before doing it (still get some gas on ya, though ).

Thx.

Hi Wes
You'll find the filter inside the frame rail right about the middle of the truck on the drivers side. They actually made it easy to get to. Changed mine about 2 weeks ago.

How did the filter that you pulled out look? I love my ford, but with my 396 BBC, I can change the fuel filter without getting my back dirty. Not only that, I can check it more easily than checking the oil.

Thanks Dale. Sounds like its in the same spot as the Gen 1 trucks. Should be simple.

And you are correct, Tundra, its not as easy as the Chebbies, but its not a hard thing to replace. It's a much bigger filter than the one you're used to looking at.

Dale,

Again, much thanks. Got the filter this AM, installed it shortly thereafter. Took 5 minutes after I got the truck on jackstands.

well I wouldn't be smoking a burro when your changing the filter brooks, HEHEHE.

proabably just clamp the hose line on both sides, your going to get some gas spilliage, but hey, nothings perfect.

The lines are very, very hard rubber-type. You cannot "clamp" them in order to keep fuel from coming out.

I just remove the gas cap to relieve some pressure. You could also disconnect the lines up by the intake.

Fact is, you will get _some_ fuel on you. Get a good thick towel/rag. There will be fuel in the filter itself. I've done enough of these that I don't get much on me at all.

And yes, as RTKILLA says...just make sure no flames are present!!

But seriously, once you get the snap ring disconnect tool, you've got all you need. Once you look under there you'll see and it will make sense.

RTKILLA...I just got mine at my dealer's parts counter. They give me a little discount and I know I'm getting a decent part.

Wes,

Was the replacement fuel filter larger than OEM? The one I procured from Wally Mart was quite a bit larger. Don't have part number memorized, yet

I just wanted the part number cause these guys by me don't know what a lightning even is when I say that to them. just like when I went in to get new brakes and they couldn't find any pads for it. I'm mean come on if your an svt dealer, you should know the vehicles, right.

Sorry guys,

Had to dig the receipt out of the trash. I also looked under my wife's Expedition and it uses the exact same filter. I'm willing to bet any 4.6/5.4 truck will use the same filters as the Lightning.

The Ford part # is:

F89Z-9155-A Retail is $16.32.

Yes you do need some of fuel rail disconnect tools. The rail connectors to the filter are spring loaded. Many of the older types just used a little plastic clamp that you could remove with a screwdriver.

You can get these disconnect tools at a local parts store for cheap. They usually come in a pack of 5 or 6. Buy the pack and it will have one in there that is the right size.
