That happened to me just after 500 miles. Turns out it was just a bad sensor in the exhaust system. Read your owner's manual for more detailed info, but basically the Service Engine Soon light only pertains to emissions control systems - i.e. it's not the end of the world. As the mechanic said to me, if the truck seems to be running fine, it's no big deal and is okay to drive.

Nerve-wracking though, isn't it? Also takes away some of that new-car-owner pride, driving around with that damn light on. >

Mine came on too, stayed on for a couple of days, only time it went off was when I filled it all the way up with Chevron gas, it went off.

Not to worry anyone - and more than likely it is just a bad sensor - however, keep an eye on engine coolant level - O2 sensor could be picking up abnormal levels of water vapor in the exhaust (which usually means a leaky head gasket) -- happen to me on my Toyota 4-runner -

Based on the reply from Jim44, we might need to monitor our Blower coolant reservoir...these IC's may be leaking on the 2001L (man I hope not!!!!!!!!!!)

Any time the check engine light comes on on a L, Check the fuel cap. If it doesn't get on just right, it leaks fumes and brings on the light. Bolt99, you most likely got it on right after the fill up.

Xjmd44, keep us posted on the coolent.

Hope this helps
