Question 2001 Third Brake Light

Anyone with a 2000-L switch their third brake light to that of the 2001L?

What is involved and what was the total cost incurred?

Thanks!

I remember reading this on here somewhere....they're over $200 from Ford. But I think they just directly replace the 2000 one....but don't quote me on that.

I've had one on order since 2/24 my understanding is it's a pretty simple swap.

Thumbs up

YES. It is a simpl bolt on replacement BUT you have to pull the headliner to get to the wiring harness to plug the new one in.
YES. They list for $238.00 but if you know some one in Ford parts, wholesale is $158.00
Hope this helps?

I got my 3rd brake light a few weeks ago and it was a direct replacement. I ordered mine and had in within a week. I've been pretty lucky about getting my parts quickly. I paid $146 total for mine. Looks a LOT better than the old 99/00 brake light!

BRIMSTONE it is very easy to take the head liner out. I just took mine out so I could sound proof my whole truck. You start by taking the visors off. Then open up the over head console and you will see two gold screws, then snap off the cover for the interior light and remove the three screws holding that on and the head liner will come right down. I am not sure if you have to take off the side trim pieces that hold the seats belts in or not, but I did because I ended up striping the whole truck.

Any questions let me know.

John

Question

John893...When TampaBay did his [think he was the first to do it on this board] he didn't do the lid. Man your truck must be super quite. I'm thinking I might do it in the near future. Are you happy with the mod?

Does this light fit the '98 F-150's? I'm guessing it does, because I don't think they've changed the light since the 97 model.

Also, does anyone have the part number? I'd sure appreciate it if someone could post it.

I just installed mine yesterday and it wasn't that simple. The holes for the cab lights are further apart on the 2001L assembly... So, this is what I did. There was a wire between the two bulbs for the cab lights, I cut it and added a few inches of wire, soldered the connections and applied heat shrink. Next, I cut the two wires that originally supplied the brake light with power and spliced them to the LED strip in the 01L assembly, once again soldering and heatshrinking. I figured this was alot easier then the whole headliner thing... The one thing you have to be careful of is making sure that when you make the connection from the original brake light wires to the new LED wires you need to make sure that the polarity is correct! Unlike regular bulbs, LED's are polarity sensitive. You can connect the wires backwards but the light won't work (It won't harm it either). Just my .02! Looks awesome!
