Software Experts: Help/Help!!!
Black, your intuition is correct, its OS ten.
George, I like your analogy. Perhaps I misspoke re:OS X, perhaps I should have said "fully enabled" as I understand the first release will not support DVD and other stuff. I anticipate that it will be just about as bulletproof as UNIX, and a lot more user friendly.
And I, too, wonder what KJ is referring to. Its true that iMacs have very limited expandibility; they are for the majority of folks who just want plug 'n play and don't know a memory chip from a potato chip. You can add memory, though, and swap out the h.d. if you need more storage. As far as the pro Macs go, I believe the new ones have 4 PCI slots and 4 drive bays, so you are limited to about a terabyte of RAM. And although numerous companies make processor upgrades for Macs, computer prices are so low they are virtually consumables; if you need more speed you can just buy a new one. A lot of PC folks hate Macs because there isn't much to tinker with, so its much harder to demonstrate your god-like superiority over a machine. As far as I'm concerned, the machines won a long time ago.

I'm currently custom building two of my macs, both will be aluminum rack mount cases, along with three other machines (two windoze and one unixs). Four of them are already running, but the new G4 is just parts now (motherboard, PS, CPU, etc.). Then new G4's actually have 5 slots, but one is for the video card. Unlike the PC's, Macs already have everything the average person uses, so "being expandable" is hardly required, unless you want to drive multiple monitors. What's funny is that today's Macs have everything PC's will have in one to two years.
BTW, back in the late 80's, a PC user pointed out to me that Mac's were only good for games, and PC's are true business computers. Nowadays, the "reason" to buy a PC over a Mac is because all the games only run on PC's. IMO, that's a bizarre reason to spend $1000.
Nuf sed.
Alpha,
I'll be at UC Riverside for a few weeks on a project. Prior to Buttonwillow, I'm going to drive my Lighting down to SoCal Speed Shop in Pomona for a new suspension. Maybe we can arrange to meet on my drive back, or if your IC is fixed in time, we can caravan to the track.
