Question How much timing before your power falls off?

I have (and seen other's posts) run 22 degrees timing at the track on 103 octane unleaded race gas. I got my best ET/MPH with 22 degrees timing.

My question: Is more better? Or is 22 degrees the dividing line between the max power and law of diminishing returns of no more power to be had with say like, 24 degrees?

Has anybody tried more than 22 degrees timing at the track?

My truck has your typical bolt-ons with a ported Eaton (see sig).

when i still had the eaton 21-23 degrees were optimal. if i remember right once we got to 21 degrees there were only 1-2hp differences between 21-22degrees and 22-23 degrees. so we backed it back down to 21.

Blown - the time in your sig is what you ran with 22deg?

Just trying to compare, my best trap speed with similiar mods is 108.9mph with 12deg WOT...this is in 40deg weather also...

Yes, in 50 degree weather, after letting the truck sit for 2 hours with the hood open. I had 100 octane unleaded, probably 75% race gas, 25% 93 octane. I believe you are leaving a lot of power on the table at 12 degrees. Just make sure you run really good gas at 22 degrees.

In my tuning experience, very few trucks liked 22 degrees over 20. Almost any Lightning will take 20 degrees hapily on a race gas tune, but I would not try 22 without doing testing on a dyno to see if you actually had an improvement or not.

Just as you can run more without a Supercharger it works the opposite way with a Larger than Eaton Supercharger. You'll find most KB's and Whipples running 12-16 degrees, as per Eatons 20 / 21 is the max I ever ran on race fuel. As for street tunes Sal and I saw power drop off over 18 degrees on pump gas on my old 02

what is the advantage of running less timing on a street tune?

You don't burn the motor up

You need 98+ octane to safely run the race tune timing.

Appreciate the input guys, thanks Sal.

For an upcoming race with a smack talkin BMW 335i owner, I will be running mostly 100 octane unleaded race gas. Is it likely that I'll run better at 20 degrees, as opposed to 22?

Although my best runs were at 22 degrees, it was a cold night, and I was letting the truck cool off substantially between rounds.

I want to be set at maximum whoop a-s-s mode.

I would not worry too much.
As long as your hooking up all he will see is your finger as you pull away

Unless he turns up with the new M5 V10 you will cane his azz.
If your on the ball you will beat the new M5 anyway on the 1/4
Be warned they cut out at 155mph however de-restricted go on to 170mph +

Happy Hunting
