Red face Vibration Update: A Reasonable Answer...

Just talked to SVT tech at the new dealership. He said that when the F150's first came out in '97, that they had a counter weight on the catalytic converter. In '98 this was no longer used, but that he had in many instances used them to offset vibrational issues.

He called SVT Hotline and made the suggestion and they told him he was right on. Also, on late '00 and now '01 L's a new hanger bracket is being used that is connected to the transmission and this may also cause some vibration in the cab.

Now don't shoot me. I'm just the messenger. But if it cures the vibration, I'm all for it. My only problem is that it sounds like a band-aid solution not a root-cause fix.

Thoughts anyone? (Believe me, I'm still going to wait for the next L coming in for comparison)

My 99 F150 had a bad vibration when I bought it new. The dealer tried a bunch of time to fix it but nothing worked.

I decided to put a custom aftermarket cat back system on it,to make it sound better. When I left the exaust shop the vibration was gone.

So I think you might be onto something, with the counter weight idea. Might be intersting to have someone drive next to you and see if the exaust tips are shaking around when the vibration is happening.

Tell the tech to neutralize the exhaust system. This is not a joke, there is a tsb out on it. They loosen all exhaust fasteners except the manifolds, start it up while on the lift. Put it in drive. Foot on brake. Rev it up a couple of times. Shut it off. Tighten all fasteners. Sometimes exhaust tubing gets manufactured a few degress out of kilter and this will bend it back into position; the rev/idle, rev/idle will 'center' it.

While the SVT exhaust is unique to that model, the 97's had a similar setup (exit ahead of the rear wheel) and they did a bunch of those...

I guess I should clarify that a bit...the tsb is out on mainstream 'F' series, but due to the similarities it should apply

Talking

Hey What04!
I'm very happy for you in finding the resolve, to the Nasty Engine Vibration.

Roger, I want to thank you very much for enlightening us on this TSB! Do you guys know the specific TSB number for this fix?

I searched and found several TSB's in ALLDATA.com, but not the specific number, I can have it handy for the service mgr if my 2001L has these symtoms when it arrives. Since i'll be trading in my 2000L, Im sure they would like to take care of the N.E.V. in it as well.

PLEASE reply with this TBS number...

Thank you fellers very much!
J.

The tech. didn't know the TSB number and said that it had been revised anyway.

The Exhaust Dampner Counter Weights part number is: XL3Z-5G209-BA Two are required.
