Post Did My First Autocross

HOLLY S$$T was this a blast. I have been drag racing for over 15 years and have never gotting the rush like I did sunday.
Okay I am Going to try to explain the day. Got there early sunday had to go threw teck no big deal there but I started to see some of the other cars there. All kinds of BMW and Porsches, and a hole lot of others, one truck(me) and a modifyed Z06.
We started runing around 10:00 , the Porsche club went first. WOW they can handle. Then the second class, this was Porsch club also but Lady drivers, and one Z06. The ladys were driving as well or better then the guys. Now the Z06 **** to the line. There is no real way to explane that car except for OH MY GOD. She posted a time 25 second faster then any one else. Class three witch was BMW, a nother fine handiling car. Finally class four (THE OTHER CLASS). After about 4 cars I finally get up. First run I was off course 1 time and hit 3 cons. These trucks have a lot of power and I found that if you man handel it, it will bit you. That run was a 1:43. Second run not much different off course once 2 cons. Same problem trying to man handle the truck, time 1:41. The last run I desided to try something new, keep it detween the cons. Drove this time like I knew what I was doing. Ran a cleen course and turned in a 1:32 time. This was my first autocross and bet 2/3 of the cars out there. You all would not believe how manny people wanted to know what a Lightning truck was.
If you guys want a rush that lasts longer then 12 sec, you really need to try an autocross. SVT has made one HELL of a truck.
To all you guys that run these trucks my hat comes off. This is one fun beast.

RUSLOW-YOU ARE THE MAN,thanks for all the help.

I cut my teeth on Solo 2,ran EM had a fun time doing it and met alot of good people.Do the autocrourse thing for a while [so you get the feel of the vehicle and can handle it,then try an open track event. You will love it that much more.Tried the 1/4 mile thing no rush in it for me.After all you are only in it for about 13 sec. then your are back in line again.Sorry but that is how I feel.

Cool

two fast 4 u - Autocross is loads of fun. Check out a couple of events we have done this year in the Dallas area.

Word of caution. Using wornout drag radials in the wet is not a good thing.

Question

I've been to several autocross events (even in the Dallas area...Texas International (did get to drive on the track, once at 135 in an RX-7 and then 150+ in a mod'd Viper...OMG!) in Apr. '99...a national event), but never drove (someone has to haul the car, do the work, etc...). It is some serious fun. The car we had was a '93 RX-7, some mods to push around 400hp (non-R1).
...anyway...I never saw a L truck, but I can imagine they are pretty wild.

Question: where was the event? what times did the z06 do (as compared to yours)?

Good job...the bug has bitten.

Same feelings here. My day at Laguna Seca was a blast. Every lap included a drag race on the main straight, and a couple other shorter ones on different parts of the course, plus hard braking and cornering. Much better than nailing the throttle, going straight, and finishing with coasting (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I'm looking forward to Buttonwillow in April!

Welcome to autocross. I have been in it for about 20 years. Try going to www.scca.org Autocross is huge in FL and scca will be happy to find a club in your area. If you need help in figuring out the sport, I can help you thru the learning curve. This sport is truly 50% driver and 50% car. If you can, Find a truly gifted driver from F-stock or E-Mod to drive your truck as you ride in the passenger seat and you will a ton about driving. Hope I can help.

This was a total blast. The Z06 was turning 1:16, It had some suspension mods and looked like sponges for tires. I really want to get more involved. I am trying to get to sebring in a couple of months with the PCA for a driver ed school. FYI these F-1s really suck. A couple of turns I plowed so hard that I thougt that it would not recover.

Blacklight,
are those dot approved?? Some guys there told me that as long as they are DOT I can use them. Have you used them, and how do they hold?? Wat rims did you put them on??

DOT approved. As to be allowed to use them, it seems as if Canada differs from the States. Check with your club. We do not have a Street Stock Class, for vehicles running actual street tires. We only have Stock, and they allow race rubber in a DOT certified tire. I think the logic is that it's actually cheaper than buying some BFG and shaving 80% of the tread off.

Not mounted yet, I am planning on a second set of the stock rims. Our first meet is on March 25.

Cool

For comparison sake only, here are the results from February's event at TMS. Cold but dry. When you consider that the two Lightning guys are a couple of numb-nutted novices, that really ain't all that bad....or something.

Doesn't matter that Doug beat me by 5 seconds yesterday and I lost to the kid on crutches driving his Dodge SST monster truck.

It is fun, yes? Now do you see why I have these :

Being a novice myself, this might help. Brake early, accelerate early. Try not to combine turning and braking.

Cool

This is something that I would REALLY like to try, but I have looked at the SCCA web site and others, and I can't find any events here in Southern California. This place used to be a hotbed of sports car competition, and you'd think with all the sports cars here there'd be some activity, but if there is I'll be darned if I can find it. Looks like if I want to do it I'd have to drive to No. Cal.
