Post Update: Rattling noise before shifting at ~3500rpms

Well the dealership has had the L for over two weeks now. They brought in the regional SVT engineer to look at the problem that a few of us have had where there is a rattling or grinding noise from the engine for about a second before shifting. Well they are replacing the engine on my 2000 w/ 5500 miles. I am only wondering if it is going to be a 2001 engine or another 2000 engine. I am hoping for the 2001 of course because of the intercooler problems. Not that we have confirmed that the 01's are leak proof. Another 20hp wouldnt hurt either. The way my luck has gone with this truck, I will most likely have a refurbed 99 engine in there :/

I have also had the L in 4 times for the front end clunk/popping problem. I have not heard what has been done to fix this problem yet. I will keep you guys updated as progress continues on both of these issues.

Keep your fingers crossed for me and take care!

Sam

Last year I started a thread about the rattle in mine. I still have it, over 20,000 miles on the L. I have given up on it and now don't worry about it.

It does it with or without the chip. It is much more noticable with the chip in though. Mine does it pretty loud so I was not willing to just sit on this one I had to get it taken care of. I read on another thread that the 00 to 01 swap proceedure is just for the long block all other parts like THE INTERCOOLER stay on the truck. That sucks I am sad now.

Sam,
Contact Action 911 and order the set of washers from him. You need them. They are the only permanent fix I know of. When they arrive take the truck to your favorite alignment guy and have him put them in. Ford will not do it. You can then either take your truck back to Ford and request them to do an alignment or have your alignment shop do it. The advantage of having Ford do it is alignment and cam bolts are part of the TSB on the front end clunk and are free. The disadvantage is Ford is doing your alignment and you probably won't be able to be there to discuss alignment specs. I was afraid they might take my washers out, also. I took mine to my alignment shop and paid for it. And it was seriously out of alignment on the driver side. Do a search and you will be able to get the alignment specs. Most alignment shops will not have the specs for the Lightning and they will confuse it with a standard F-150. I was getting outer edge wear on both tires at only 2500 easy miles. Expensive tires to be destroying.

Question

Has anyone thought to look at the heat shields as the possible noise?
They are very flimsy and I think it could be their vibration (resonance) that is causing this noise. Unfortunately I do not have access to any kind of shop anymore, but looking under the truck the heat shields are merely L shaped aluminium with no support on the bottom side. Just a thought.

My 2000 L does the same thing. It almost sounds like hydrulic lifters floating just before it shifts. Mine seems to rattle worst when it shifts around 3500 to 4000 RPM.

I didn't notice it untill I reinstalled my R9 the other day.

I don't notice it at WOT. Maybe I am too busy holding on.

Has anyone found a solution for the problem??
