Oil Pressure at Idle

Unhappy Oil Pressure at Idle

Mine is about 4 lbs. I don't think that is right for a built motor.
It drops the IDIOT GAUGE to 0 and turns on the red ADD OIL.

Any ideas on what could be causing it? It goes back to "OK"
on the idiot gauge if I blip the throttle. Happens mostly when
it is hot and under load like at a light in Drive.

At 2500 RPM I have 25 pounds. At 4500 RPM it's 45 pounds.

Someone said maybe the plugs for the oil passages weren't
installed in the head? They are ROMEO Heads, BTW

Or the Pump piston overflow was "c o c k e d" and routing the
oil back to the pan?

All ideas are welcome ... I am a bit confused.

both of those ideas could be.or someone forgot toinstall the o ring on the oil pump pickup.also could be the bearing clearances are loose.Mine holds about 35 hot idle and over 80 at 2k.I run the cobra pump.Stan

Thanks Stan,

I would hope that a "built" engine would have tighter tolerances, not looser ones, right?

Well, it's going in to the shop Saturday to be looked at next week.
It runs poorly when cold (misses, erratic, etc.) and I am hoping we
can find the issue. I know they are going to take off the front again,
and check the oil pump. Hopefully we will put the bugs to bed.

446 HP and 526 TQ is pretty stout, isn't it? Basically all the "safety"
build outs and cams and headers is all we did. It made a huge difference
on the track, I can tell ya.

your numbers are good cliff. you still have a stock eaton with only a 6lb lower. those long tubes could have cost you some boost also. keep in mind also that your a/f was taken from the tailpipe. i am sure your tune as some room to grow. i bet i dont make much more with my setup when i get it working.

The rule of thumb is 10#s oil pressure per 1000 rpm. I have the hv setup and run 60#s cold and about 35#s hot with a 5-20 oil at idle 800 rpm.

We are talking about built motors with high volume oil pumps, I presume mine when oil is hot runs about 35-40 when doing normal driving.

Cliff,
Had the same problem last year. Found out my engine builder left out both oil galley plugs (freeze plug style). There is one in the front and one in the back of the block. The oil passage runs parallel with the crankshaft. He also put standard bearings in my engine when the crank had been cut. Major PIA, finally yanked the engine back out after 30 miles and had another one built. Salvaged the rods(billet i beams), custom CP pistons, and block. Had to buy another crank, bearings, rings and have it all cleaned, inspected and rebalanced. Hope you find that gremlin soon!!

You got a picture of where these are?
Wouldn't that mean NO oil pressure? I have some
at speed ... so I am hoping they find out the issues
this week. Greg called me and they have checked the
"O" ring on the intake, and are replacing the oil pump.
He said that you could see the "plugs" in some of the pics
that he posted up of the heads, so he was pretty confident
that wasn't the problem.

Are you using a mechanical gauge to register this? Just checking. I've seen the stock oil senders go bad. Good luck man!

Cliff, I can get some pics from the spare block I have tomorrow. One is in the front of the block, right above the the crankshaft. It runs parallel to the crank. The other is in the back behind the rear main aluminum plate. The first engine didnt have either. If you dont have the plugs, you will have little to no oil pressure at idle. I tried the plugs, then the pump, finally I found the bearings were the wrong size. Hope your engine doesent have the same problem my first one did...I'll shoot you some pics before noon tomorrow.
