I usually wait 45 seconds or so.. I've read that anything over 1 minute is a waste of gas.. That is plenty of time to get the oil circulating in the engine..

After that, I take it easy on the gas until the entire engine warms up.

I let mine warm up until the idle drops down near normal range. Doesn't usually take more then a minute or so.

Okay. I asked my dad about it, and here's what he said, for what it's worth:

--begin--
Start the engine and then as soon as it is
running smoothly (1 to 2 seconds if it is working properly) put it in gear and start out gently. The reason is that the majority of wear comes when the oil is cold, below about 125 F. When you idle, the engine doesn't warm up very fast and it stays in that high wear mode for a longer time than if you gently start driving it. Don't exceed about 35 or 40 mph until the temperature gage show normal operating temperature. Should only take about 4 or five blocks. If it takes longer than that you need a new thermostat to get the engine warmed up faster. Just remember no jack
rabbit starts until the engine is fully warmed up.
--end--

So there you go. How he knows this, I do not know. For all I know, he read this in Readers Digest. Then again, he does have a PhD in mechanical engineer (retired professor). If you wanna post flames, I'll make sure he gets them.

P.S.( Jack rabbit starts...me? )

I jump in the truck, fire her up, then I sit there & power brake @ 5000rpms till the garage is filled with smoke. Then I gentle leave the garage.

Wow. Then I guess I shouldn't drive as fast as I can to see the smoke trail come out of my truck. But, that sure is cool, ain't it?

Cool

my proceedure is to start up, immediatly check radar detector's test lights, and leave on the 2nd yellow. it's surprised a few animals and the paper boy at times, but it's a good system, i have a long driveway, and my 60's are consistant

I always use the same hand to start it and put it in gear, so I guess that's a second or so...
Nah-- can't lie...I usually just listen to the engine. I can tell when she's ready to go. It may be 10 seconds or 30, but rarely more. We don't have much of a winter in south Texas.

It all depends wether or not I am late for work.
If I am running late, I am in Drive and moving before the starter even gets done disingaging.
If I am not running late, about 1 or 2 seconds.

I warm mine for about a minute. Build oil pressure, and wait for the pistons to quiet, then its off and running. No red line until it's completely warm.
