Exclamation 99 Heater Hose Suspect- Inspect Yours!

I had a heater hose burst at speed under hard acceleration. The hose (top one) burst with 3" gash on curved part that comes from tube rising from back of induction.
Upon replacement I noticed the hose goes from 3/4" from rear induction tube to 5/8" running to firewall. On the inside of the hose there is a reducer gormet that is 3/8" in diameter before the hose reduces to 5/8" after the curve. I believe this is where the hose was put under pressure and caused the gash. I simply cut out the damaged area and installed a 3/4" piece of heater hose running to the tube (back of the induction)with a insert(3/4 to 5/8)and hose clamps.
Anyone know why the hose has a reducer built inside of it?

I would check yours for signs of cracking or replace all together. Makes a hellava mess if it blows at speed!!!

I had that happen to me awhile back. That little reducer is only to muffle the swishing bubbling sound that it makes. Thats what the dealer told me anyway. HTH

The restriction protects the heater core at high rpm. It drops pressure and reduces turbulent erosion within core and thus exends core life.

same prob

Just happened to me today. Lost all the coolant. Cut out the bad portion of hose and replaced with new piece with coupler. Don't really trust this, but how the hell do you get the whole hose out. Also i did not reinstall the brass insert that looks it has a square cut out. Am I in danger of damaging the heater core??

I've had just a generic piece of heater hose on mine for over 5 years after mine went back in 01. I've had no issues with my heater core- 112K and counting

thanks for the info. Supposedly there is some sort of removal tool??? Everything seems to be ok--no leaks--just afraid that other piece of hose may be compromised. Called pepboys and they tell me the replacements run $22 and $33. Don't really care about the money, but I can't seem to figure out how to get what to me looks like crimped ends off?? Anyone know how to do this without having to cut anything?? I keep reading about these alleged quick disconnects???Do they look like crimped ends???Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

They are a quick release coupling.
Just push on it a little and squeeze in the side tabs and it should seperate.

BTW a mate had his one let go on a 2001 truck last year.

Worth replacing both as you don't want to dump your coolant over your tyres
going down the 1/4 it would make a mess of your 60ft time

I blew two heater hoses last year, so last change I swapped all the remaining ones regardless... First was was the under-rear one, second time was the passenger side one over the spark plugs...ruined two coil packs on me when it went.

Got new molded hoses from pepboys(they have the quick connectors on them already) looks simple enough. Was told by old school mechanic to use 90 degree needle noses to remove old hoses. Also purchased lower rad hose contraption at a cost of $41??? Anybody got advice how to tackle lower hose? Looks like connection to bottle/reservoir as well. Upper hose was piece of cake!!!
